Digital Wasteland: December 7th, 2010

INCEPTION (DVD & Blu-Ray) - Strangely enough, this is a bit of a hard one for me to suggest you to buy. INCEPTION, as a film, is amazing and easily one of the best of 2011. A lot has been written about it and I won’t waste your time repeating it. This is, simply put, a great film. However, both the DVD and the Blu-Ray are decidedly…lame. There are no audio commentaries, no picture-in-picture visual commentaries and no substantial special features, just lots and lots of fluff. There’s a brief thing about dreams, a couple of behind-the-scenes bits, some prequel motion comics and a soundtrack 5.1 thing, but I can’t help but feel there is a much more exhaustive release of this down the road. Buy it if you love it, but know that you’ll probably be re-buying it in a year or two when the deluxe “totem” edition or whatever they call it comes out.

HUNTER PREY (DVD) - This one is a little more obscure than most and you probably won’t find it at your local Target, but it is definitely worth hunting down. Director Sandy Collara went old school with this one, opting to pay homage to flicks like BATTLEGROUND and ENEMY MINE, and the final result is pretty fantastic. Here’s the trailer:

CRONOS: THE CRITERION EDITION (DVD & Blu-Ray) - Considering it has been nearly fifteen years since I’ve seen Guillermo Del Toro’s directorial debut, I honestly don’t remember a second of it. Take my fanboy card, I know, but I just don’t remember this flick. I remember seeing it on Cinemax late one night back in the mid-90s, but that’s about it. I’m going to go ahead and suggest this one as a blind MUST BUY simply based on the fact that Del Toro is one of the best directors out there and I’m pretty sure (I’d say about 85% sure) that this flick is worth seeing. Hell, it’s a Criterion, so you know it has to be good. Right?

SHREK FOREVER AFTER (DVD & Blu-Ray) - Didn’t see it, but I’ve heard semi-decent things. Granted, most of the things I heard were prefaced with “At least it wasn’t as bad as SHREK 3”, so I’m not really sure if this is a good movie or not. Shrek fans will probably love it and I’m sure the kiddies need something new to keep them quiet during the holidays.

CLOSER (Blu-Ray) - New to Blu-Ray, CLOSER isn’t exactly what you would call a movie. It’s more of a four character filmed stage play that stays confined to small sets, yet deals with big issues like adultery and the sanctity of marriage. Definitely not for everyone, but I dig it. Actually, I dig it because it’s amazing to see Natalie Portman act circles around seasoned pros like Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Clive Owen and she does so effortlessly. I’m guessing this one was re-released to cash-in on Portman in BLACK SWAN. Smart move, Sony.

BEYONCE: I AM…WORLD TOUR (Blu-Ray) - I’m not a Beyonce fan, so this one does absolutely nothing for me. If you’re a fan, I’m sure you’ll check this one out. Me? I think the following videos sum up my feelings on the Beyonce experience:

VIDEODROME - THE CRITERION EDITION (Blu-Ray) - In the spirit of honesty, I’ve never really been the biggest fan of VIDEODROME. Oh, I’m a Cronenberg fan and I love most of his work, but this one has never been my cup of tea. However, Cronenberg Completists will need to pick this one up to round out there collection. Basically a Blu reprint of the Criterion DVD from a few years back, there aren’t really any new features on this one except for a sweet new transfer. Who knows? Maybe I’ll check this one out again and it will grow on me. As for now, I’m suggesting it more out of respect than love.
