Considering INSIDIOUS is the year’s most profitable film (grossed nearly 70mil worldwide off a 1.5mil budget), I’m honestly shocked that nobody has inquired about a sequel before now. After all, that is the way of Hollywood: Milk a horror hit until it is good and dry. FRIDAY THE 13th did it, HALLOWEEN did it, SAW did it and now is the time for INSIDIOUS to rake in some of that mad sequel money money, right?
Wrong. Shock Till You Drop caught up with producer Jason Blum earlier this week and hit him up about INSIDIOUS 2 and here’s what he had to say:
"I wouldn't say we're not considering it. There's no plan, no release date, nothing like that. I think James feels the same as Oren [Peli]. Oren was very skeptical about doing a sequel to Paranormal Activity until Michael [Perry] pitched an idea and it made sense. If Leigh comes up with a story that's inventive and you feel like there's a story to tell - as opposed to 'let's make another movie and make money' - and he comes up with something James feels is worth making we would do it. And if Leigh doesn't, we won't."
Hope Blum sticks with that attitude and doesn’t give in to the almighty dollar. INSIDIOUS was an amazing scare pic and while it did it end with a slight sequel note, I don’t know that it necessarily needs a sequel. The film stands solid on its own and serves as a reminder that the “scares doesn’t mean gore” approach still works. Be nice if, for once, the studio didn’t tarnish another horror classic by milking it to death.
