Jesse Eisenberg Worries That ZOMBIELAND 2 Delay Might Render It “Less Relevant”. Huh?

I knew I was justified in my dislike of THE SOCIAL NETWORK. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it. Oh wait, that really has nothing to do with the following piece…or does it?

Anyways, ZOMBIELAND 2. Remember when this was immediately promised by all the folks who brought us the first film? Yeah, looks like that promise might go unfulfilled. The first nail in the coffin was about a year ago when Woody Harrelson expressed his distaste for sequels and implied that he wasn’t interested in doing one. Then came word that the studio had grown disinterested in a follow-up and that all of the major players had moved on to other projects (director Ruben Fleischer is attached to THE GANGSTER SQUAD, Emma Stone has seven movies coming out including the reboot of SPIDER-MAN and Abigail Breslin is quickly growing out of the role).

The final nail in the coffin, kind of, seems to have been delivered by none other than Jesse Eisenberg. While the following isn’t exactly him saying that the project is dead, it basically is just that. Dude can’t play around in quirky genre films forever (especially considering that Best Actor nod he got for NETWORK) and…well, just read the quote and you’ll see what I mean:

They’re writing the script right now but I haven’t seen it and I suspect that the longer we wait, the less relevant it will be. I mean, all the actors would love to do it and the director would love to do it but I’m not sure what’s happening.

Strange quote, especially considering Eisenberg just re-teamed with Ruben Fleischer for 30 MINUTES OR LESS. I’ve got a feeling that the relevancy he’s talking about is in reference to his career and how doing a sequel right after slamming into A-list stardom thanks to a hugely popular, and supposedly, important movie sweeps all of the awards show might be considered a bad move.

And don’t argue to me that LESS is a dumb comedy and that it fills the quota of bad post-Oscar move. 30 MINUTES OR LESS was filmed around the same time as THE SOCIAL NETWORK and I don’t think that anyone involved with NETWORK had any idea that the “Facebook Movie” was going to be the hit that it was. Hell, I remember when all the movie sites were ridiculing that flick in the months leading up to release. I don’t think anybody expected the positive response it recieved…especially Eisenberg. Dude needs to start thinking about the future and I just don’t see ZOMBIELAND 2 being a part of his. And now I have a really, really good reason to hate THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

USELESS KNOWLEDGE: Patrick Swayze, Sylvester Stallone, Joe Pesci, Mark Hamill, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Matthew McConaughey were all considered for the big celebrity cameo in the first film.
