Alcon Entertainment And Kurt Wimmer Go To The Extreme With POINT BREAK Reboot

According to Deadline, Alcon Entertainment (the studio behind the recently-announced BLADE RUNNER sequel/prequel/reboot thing) and Kurt Wimmer (writer of the upcoming TOTAL RECALL remake) have teamed up to reboot the 1991 cult classic POINT BREAK. Gotta wonder if this will actually ever see the light of day or if it will end up disappearing like the pseudo-sequel (POINT BREAK: INDO) Jan De Bont was working on a few years back.

Here’s a little bit of plot info and whatnot:

The new version is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring, but plot points beyond that have not been revealed by the filmmakers. State Johnson and Kosove: “Who doesn’t love the Kathryn Bigelow original and its pure heart-pounding action and thrills? Kurt’s take infuses the story and characters with new twists and settings.” Adds DeLuca “’Point Break’ wasn’t just a film, it was a Zen meditation on testosterone fueled action and manhood in the late 20th century and we hope to create the same for the young 21st!” In addition to the feature rights, Alcon has also secured television and gaming rights to POINT BREAK.

Don’t really have any feelings about this, positive or negative. The original exists and is still a kick-ass movie. I’d go so far as to say it is one of the best action movies of the 90s. If you want it, it’s there. If you don’t…you’ll either be down seeing a new take featuring a bunch of young up-and-coming actors playing cops and robbers or you won’t.

USELESS KNOWLEDGE: Wimmer wrote such movies as SALT, LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, THE RECRUIT and THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR. He also directed EQUILIBRIUM…which is a one of the biggest unseen sci-fi gems (it’s FAHRENHEIT 451 meets THE MATRIX) of the last fifteen years. Dude is more than well-suited for a BREAK redo. I’ll be very interested to see what he brings to the table.
