It’s Wednesday, hump day. The week is half over, and the weekend is just around the corner, so what is a dedicated movie watcher to do? In this weekly column, AngieBee makes her suggestions on what movies you should check out to get you through the rest of the week.
PLOT: A high-powered PR professional discovers that her brother is about to marry the woman who made her high school life a living hell in this comedy starring Kristen Bell and Odette Yustman. Back in her teens, Marni (Kristen Bell) was a little awkward. These days she's a successful career woman, but the memories of being tormented by popular cheerleader Joanna (Odette Yustman) still make her break into a cold sweat.
Flying home for her brother's Will's wedding, Marni realizes to her horror that she will soon be sister-in-law to the pompon-wielding mean girl who once humiliated her in front of the entire student body. And apparently her nemesis learned from the best, because back when Marni's mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) was in high school, Joanna's aunt (Sigourney Weaver) served up the same kind of treatment. Now that they're about to become family, Marni and her mom do their best to let bygones be bygones. But old grudges die hard, and by the time the wedding bells chime, these old foes will already have some saucy stories to share with their grandchildren.
REVIEW: AngieBee here with this week’s Hump Day movie YOU AGAIN. Yes, I realize I have taken a bit of a break lately but you would too with all the horror movies J makes me watch during October. However, I am back with a wonderful movie that I totally regret not getting to see in the theater. I can’t for the life of me remember why I didn’t go see YOU AGAIN but I guess I just wasn’t thinking that it would be something I‘d enjoy.
All I know that now that I have seen it, I’m glad. YOU AGAIN is a fun movie that makes me look back and wonder if I threw temper tantrums in high school like these characters are now.
The talent in this film is amazing. I never would have imagined seeing Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver in a rom-com together. Gail (Curtis) the mother to Marni (Bell) who was picked on in high school by Joanna (Yustman) who is the niece of Ramona (Weaver) who was also Gail’s nemesis in high school. Did ya get all that? All of the four main actors (well, actresses) do a great job and really connect in ways that are quite unexpected for a movie as fluffy as this.
Victor Garber has some good moments as Gail’s husband and lets not forget about grandma Betty White. All the actors worked incredibly well together. There was no grandstanding and no one seemed to be vying for all the attention. I love to see it when ensembles work and don’t try to one-up each other in every scene.
This movie fulfills everyone’s secret wish (especially those that got picked on in school) to get revenge on those who put them down in the past. If you have that wish then YOU AGAIN is loaded with goodies for you: these girls throw plates, pour clam chowder over each other, toss each other into swimming pools, cheerleaders (including two very pregnant cheerleaders), drop video proof to prove just how terrible Joanna was to Marni at a wedding and a guest appearance by Hall & Oates. Yes, I said Hall & Oates, they actually perform in in finale. Oh and there’s an unofficial STEP BY STEP reunion in the finale too for all you TGIF fans out there.
Some of the funniest moments are when Marni starts to transform back in to the nerd she was in high school. Ant bites begin to look like acne, she loses her contacts and is stuck wearing her glasses from high school and the list goes on and on. Seems the more perfect Joanna gets, the more desperate and depressing Marni becomes. This would be a nightmare when all you really want is rub it in everyone‘s faces how far you‘ve come since being the nerdiest nerd ever..
YOU AGAIN, despite being a little slight, is definitely on my MUST SEE list. There’s more for ladies here than men so sorry about that. Guys might get a kick out of Kristen Bell and Odette Yustman going to war with each other so I guess that last statement wasn‘t exactly true. There is something here for everyone!
I realize YOU AGAIN is a bit predictable, but sometimes I need predictable. It’s not bad to want to laugh even if you know where the plot is going. Besides it’s the journey that makes a good movie a good movie. Congratulations!!! You made it, the week is half over and the weekend is just around the corner.
