The MORTAL KOMBAT Reboot Is About …A Lowly Supermarket Clerk? WTF?!?

Bloody Disgusting has discovered Kevin Tancharoen's upcoming MORTAL KOMBAT reboot is quite a bit different than any of us were probably expecting.

The safe assumption was the film would either be a continuation or full-on revamp of Tancharoen's MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY web-series (which I've included below along with the "proof of concept" short REBIRTH) that came out last year and seemed to go over pretty well with the studio (Warner Bros actually released it to DVD and Blu-Ray where it garnered decent sales) and the fanboys (who were still reeling from the unholy sh*tstorm that was MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION).

The truth is Warner apparently dug Tancharoen and writer Oren Uziel but not the product they churned out. Don't believe me? BD has uncovered the MK reboot film isn't going to center around any of the already established MK characters but a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is.

Ugh. A supermarket employee? Are you kidding me? Why not just make him some kid from the trailer park who's really good at MORTAL KOMBAT? I mean, seriously, if you're gonna rip off THE LAST STARFIGHTER and f*ck up what's already been established then do it on an EPIC scale. Don't lowball it. Make it PG. Aim it towards the kiddies because I guarantee no fan of the franchise is going to dig some dippy register jockey fighting against or alongside the likes of Liu Kang, Raiden, and Shang Tsung.

What's really sad is it appears Tancharoen is 100% okay with this turn of events. I thought this guy was supposed to be "The Chosen One". The one who was supposed to destroy the sh*tty MK films that came before, not join them! Bring balance to the franchise, not leave it in darkness! Wait. Did I just jump to STAR WARS? Dammit. Been trying to curb that. Too much cross-referencing there is. Ooops.

Back on point: I don't think is the MORTAL KOMBAT film I or the fans were expecting. I really hope Bloody Disgusting is off the mark here because Tancharoen showed such promise. Watch the vids below if you don't believe me. What's below is one of the rare videogame movies that DOESN'T suck.
