Bad news, everyone! A new teaser vid and promo image for the upcoming ROBOCOP reboot has revealed director Jose Padilha has “transformed” vicious but adorable ED-209 into a sharp-edged, nondescript Bayformer. Why he couldn’t have just stuck with the original, iconic Phil Tippet design is beyond me. Playing homage to a modern classic beats copying what’s popular with the kiddies any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Oh well. I guess I’ll just have to take solace in the casting of Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy and …ugh. Kinnaman? Really? The “star” of the “hit” AMC series THE KILLING? I honestly thought this dude was a just a placeholder actor that the studio chose while holding out for rumored contenders Russell Crowe and Michael Fassbender. Either of those two would’ve been a better choice than Kinnaman.
Oh double well. I guess I’ll just take double solace in the fact Kinnaman’s co-stars will be Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Hugh Laurie, and Samuel L. Jackson. Decent co-stars might just make up for the lack of a solid lead and a botched revamp of ED-209. One can hope.
