Who Ya Gonna Call? MIB3 Scribe Etan Cohen To Rewrite GHOSTBUSTERS 3!

UPDATE: Variety has gotten word Etan Cohen, writer of MEN IN BLACK III (a sequel that was far better than it had any right to be), TROPIC THUNDER (one of my favorite comedies ever), and IDOCRACY (criminally underrated), has been tapped by Sony Pictures to do a “page one” rewrite of GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

Dan Aykroyd, while promoting his Crystal Head Vodka, has revealed to WIVB that writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (of YEAR ONE and BAD TEACHER infamy) have exited the long-in-development GHOSTBUSTERS 3 and new ones (their identities were not revealed) have been brought in.

Here’s Aykroyd’s exact quote: "We've got a new writing staff working on it now. It's got to be perfect. That's the whole thing. There's no point in doing it unless it's perfect. So that's what we're up to now."

Rough translation: Aykroyd is likely regretting his statement about how Bill Murray (who hated the Eisenberg/Stupnitsky script so much he reportedly shredded it and sent the pieces to co-stars Aykroyd and Harold Ramis) could be replaced as Peter Venkman much like different actors have played James Bond and Jack Ryan and he’s realized a new script is a better option than losing the biggest star in the cast. Good call. Too bad it doesn’t change the fact this is a sequel that’s twenty years too late. Oh well…

USELESS KNOWLEDGE: Bill Murray expressed his disappointment with GHOSTBUSTERS 2 to Entertainment Weekly by saying "it was a whole lot of slime, and not much of us."
