Gal Gadot Cast As Wonder Woman In MAN OF STEEL 2; Jason Momoa May Join As Either Doomsday Or Martian Manhunter

Variety is reporting Gal Gadot from the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise has been cast as Wonder Woman in director Zack Synder’s upcoming MAN OF STEEL sequel. She beat out Elodie Yung (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) and Olga Kurylenko (QUANTUM OF SOLACE) for the part.

Synder had this to say about the casting: “Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”

While I would’ve preferred her FURIOUS SIX co-star Gina Carano been cast, I’m actually good with Gadot. She’s unknown enough the audience won’t know what to expect from her, but known enough they’ll be comfortable. She was good in the last three FAST flicks, so I can’t imagine she’ll be bad here. Only real gripe I have is Wonder Woman shouldn’t be appearing in this flick. More on that in a bit.

According to THR, actor Jason Momoa is in talks to join the cast as an unspecified character. Martian Manhunter, a green-skinned super-powered alien trapped on Earth, and Doomsday, the Kryptonian beast that “killed” Superman in the comics, are the top candidates. Lobo, an interstellar bounty hunter, is also being rumored, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for that clown.

My money is on Doomsday since Warner and DC have been trying to get the character on the big screen for over twenty years now. Ever hear of SUPERMAN REBORN, the early 90s “family friendly” attempt to reboot Supes? How about the Kevin Smith penned SUPERMAN LIVES? Or the aborted Tim Burton directed, Nic Cage starring Superman pic that almost hit theaters back in the summer of 1998? Doomsday was set to headline all of these projects as the main baddie, so it’s a safe bet Momoa, if cast, will be Doomsday.

Like with Gadot as Wonder Woman, I’m good with this. Hell, I’m good with Momoa playing any character in the DC universe. Hero or villain, Momoa would be great as either. Don’t believe me? Just check out his villain turn in the recent Sylvester Stallone dud BULLET IN THE HEAD. 100% badass. For evidence of Momoa’s heroic badassery, I point you to his role as Khal Drogo on GAME OF THRONES and as Conan in the CONAN THE BARBARIAN reboot. 110% Badass.

Let’s all hope, for the sake of badass cinematic comic heroes/villains, this deal goes down and doesn’t implode like his rumored involvement with Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY -- he was reportedly going to play Drax The Destroyer -- did.

My honest opinion about MAN OF STEEL 2, SUPERMAN VS. BATMAN, SUPER FRIENDS, WORLD’S FINEST, JUSTICE LEAGUE: ORIGINS, BATS AND SUPES: BEST BUDS FOREVER or whatever the hell they end up calling it is that it’s going to be a bit of clusterf*ck. Cavill’s Superman was barely fleshed out in MAN OF STEEL, a deeply flawed film regardless of lackluster character development, so having him split screentime with Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Lex Luthor (Terry O’Quinn, Mark Strong, and Bryan Cranston have all been rumored), whoever Momoa ends up playing, and the returning cast (Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, etc) feels like a really bad idea.

Scratch that: This IS a bad idea. Lex is understandable and obviously there has to be an actual physical villain for Supes to deal with, but throwing an origin-less Batman and Wonder Woman into the mix is too much. Too much. Not that Warner and DC care. They want JUSTICE LEAGUE and a piece of that AVENGERS mad money so bad they’ll do anything, including FUBARing MAN OF STEEL 2. It’s a miracle they haven’t thrown in a new Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkman, Aquaman, and the Wonder Twins too.
