T.G.I.F. #45: LOLITA (1997)

TOTALLY GRATUITOUS AND INAPPROPRIATE FRIDAY is a spoiler-laden NSFW podcast where J Bryant and AngieBee discuss movies/shows you probably shouldn’t watch with your spouse, significant other, teenage children, parents, small children, buddies, children in general, siblings, folks you barely know, or ones with heart conditions. You’ve been warned.

In this week's episode of Totally Gratuitous and Inappropriate Friday, J Bryant and AngieBee check out director Adrian Lyne's controversial 1997 film adaptation of LOLITA starring Jeremy Irons, Melanie Griffith, Frank Langella, and Dominique Swain.

Newly arrived in Ramsdale, New Hampshire, Humbert Humbert is smitten. He plans to marry Charlotte Haze. That way he’ll always be close to his dear one – Charlotte’s precocious daughter! Filmmaker Adrian Lyne explores the theme of sexual obsession with this darkly comic and deeply moving version of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel. Jeremy Irons plays devious, deluded Humbert: wedded to needy Charlotte (Melanie Griffith); rivaled by the ubiquitous Clare Quilty (Frank Langella); and enraptured to his gelatinous core by the blithe teen (Dominique Swain) with that “lovely, lyrical, lilting name” – Lolita.

The Official LOLITA Drinking Game

Take a shot if…

…Lolita dances.
…Humbert pretends to read a newspaper.
…Clare Quilty silently lingers in the background.

Take a double shot if…

…Charlotte screams at Lolita.
…the old lady next door waves.
…a little dog harasses Humbert.

Take a triple shot if…

…Frank Langella’s wang makes an appearance.
