Review: THE GREAT WALL / ASSASSIN’S CREED / UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

> Michael Fassbender and Ariane Labed did 95% of the fights in the film themselves.

> The film features the highest free fall performed by a stuntman in almost 35 years. The stuntman Damien Walters performed a free fall from the height of 125 feet (38 meters), which lasted almost 3 seconds with a 61 mph impact speed.

> The Assassins costumes took 2-3 months to make and were all hand-crafted. There are eight versions of each costume, with an entire costume team devoted to each of the Assassins.

> 80% of the film, including stunts, extras and locations, were shot on camera, without using CGI.

> Director Justin Kurzel didn't want to show Assassins as heroes and Templar as villains, or the opposite, because both ideologies can't be clearly called right or wrong and both of them can be corrupted, they can go to extremes: anarchy for Assassins and control for Templars.

> The story of the film will be a new screenplay written specifically for this purpose, and not following the storyline of the games, allowing Ubisoft to develop unique stories for the big screen while maintaining their stories on our small screens.

> The historical sequences set in 15th century Spain were shot in Spanish language. According to Justin Kurzel, they tried to do them in English first, but the decision about Spanish was too obvious and good, and it adds an exoticness and richness to the film. In games, however, this sequences were in English as well as modern-day scenes, which was explained by the presence of built-in translator in the Animus machine.

The next installment in the blockbuster franchise, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

> It was originally thought that this was Kate Beckinsale's last movie playing the character Selene, but Len Wiseman has confirmed a sixth movie is in development with Beckinsale reprising her character.

> Tobias Menzies, James Faulkner, and Charles Dance have all appeared on GAME OF THRONES. Respectively as Edmure Tully Lord of Riverrun imprisoned by the Freys, Tywin Lannister killed on the toilet by his own son, and Lord Randyll Tarly Samwells, father and owner of the Valyrian steel sword Heartsbane. The three share no scenes with each other in UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS.

> Despite the poster saying the Great Wall took 1700 years to build, it is a series of several walls built separately over that time by various ruling dynasties during this time frame. Each new wall section built by any single ruler would take approximately 10-20 years to construct.

> Edward Zwick was set to direct at one point, with Henry Cavill to star.

> Andy Lau and Matt Damon played the role of the gang member working as a mole in the police force in Infernal Affairs (2002) and The Departed (2006) respectively.
