Review: GHOST IN THE SHELL / THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE / GOING IN STYLE

In the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: a human who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people's minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that her life was stolen instead of saved. Now, she will stop at nothing to recover her past while punishing those who did this to her.

For the Japanese dub of the film, the voice actors from the GHOST IN THE SHELL anime - Atsuko Tanaka (the Major), Akio Ôtsuka (Batou) and Kôichi Yamadera (Togusa) - reprise their roles. (IMDB)

The time is 1939 and the place is Poland, homeland of Antonina Zabinski (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski (Johan Heldenberg). The Warsaw Zoo flourishes under Jan's stewardship and Antonina's care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are forced to report to the Reich's newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Bruhl). The Zabinskis covertly begin working with the Resistance and put into action plans to save the lives of hundreds from what has become the Warsaw Ghetto.

Director Niki Caro stated that the first cut of THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE was nearly three and a half hours long, utilizing the entire screenplay. The final film was required to be two hours in length, and so an hour and a half was cut from the film in the editing room. (IMDB)

Lifelong buddies Willie (Morgan Freeman), Joe (Michael Caine) and Albert (Alan Arkin) decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow when their pension funds become a corporate casualty. Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three men risk it all by embarking on a daring adventure to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.

Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin had never worked together prior to this. However, one actor replaced the other in THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES in 1990. Arkin was the original choice and signed on for the judge character when said role was to be played by a Jewish actor. But during production, Director Brian De Palma changed his mind and opted for an African-American actor, and Freeman got the role. (IMDB)
