Review: ANNIHILATION / GAME NIGHT / WHEN WE FIRST MET

ANNIHILATION follows a group of military scientists who enter "The Shimmer", a mysterious quarantined zone of mutating landscapes and transmogrifying creatures.

Due to a poorly received test screening, David Ellison, a financier at Paramount, became concerned that the film was "too intellectual" and "too complicated," and demanded changes to make it appeal to a wider audience, including making Portman's character more sympathetic and changing the ending. Producer Scott Rudin sided with Garland in his desire to not alter the film, defending the film and refusing to take notes. Rudin had final cut. (IMDB)

Max and Annie's weekly game night gets kicked up a notch when Max's brother Brooks arranges a murder mystery party -- complete with fake thugs and federal agents. So when Brooks gets kidnapped, it's all supposed to be part of the game. As the competitors set out to solve the case, they start to learn that neither the game nor Brooks are what they seem to be. The friends soon find themselves in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn over the course of one chaotic night.

Throughout the film, various children's games are played while trying to navigate the plot. "Simon Says" is played when Rachel McAdams is holding the gun to the kidnappers in the bar. "Hot Potato" is played with the egg. "Charades" is played between Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams at the airport. Kevin and Michelle's argument, their escape from the locked room, as well as Annie removing the bullet from Max's arm, seem to be references to classic board games "Guess Who," "Jenga," and "Operation," respectively. After spending a night with the girl of his dreams only to become just friends, a man gets the opportunity to travel through time and alter that night over and over again until he gets everything perfect.

Writer John Whittington had always envisioned a Tom Hanks-esqe actor to portray Noah, and settled early on Adam DeVine. However, when Adam booked the lead role opposite Zac Efron in MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES, he was worried that Adam would be too busy, or not interested in doing a smaller film. Amazingly, Adam remained passionate about the film, and fought hard to get it made. John, ultimately, gave Adam enormous credit in the development of this film, and stated that without him, the movie had a very small chance of being made. (IMDB)
