Disney To Bring Older Animated Classics To 3D Blu-Ray Alongside Newer Releases

With the popularity of 3D televisions growing day by day, the studios have shocking been slow to adapt to the new format. Oh sure, there’s a few 3D Blu-Rays floating around out there, but not as many as you would think. I’d wager to guess that there are maybe 60 actual true blue 3D flicks floating around at your local Best Buy right now and most of them are IMAX documentaries rather than movies.

Thankfully, Disney seems to be stepping up to the plate to rectify that. A recent announcement has not only confirmed that they will be releasing their current crop of theatrical 3D movies (that would be TANGLED and TRON LEGACY) to 3D Blu-Ray date-and-day with the standard release, but that they will also be converting a good deal of their older animated catalog films as well. Already in the can are BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (you might remember that Disney announced the 3D conversion of this one a few years back ) and THE LION KING.

THE GREEN HORNET Stings Korea With A Quartet Of Character Posters

THE GREEN HORNET. I’m still pretty on the fence as to whether or not this is going to be a great movie or an out-and-out debacle. On one hand, the early word-of-mouth is surprisingly positive and the trailers seem to have an inkling of promise in them. On the other, stars Seth Rogen and Jay Chou are shilling for Hardees in character. And do I really need to mention the biggest question mark of them all, the mere idea that audiences are supposed to buy the guy from KNOCKED UP and PINEAPPLE EXPRESS as a superhero?

I could back and forth on this all day. For every positive about this flick (Michel Gondry at the helm, Hans Landa…er, I mean, Christoph Waltz as the main baddie, amazing source material) there seems to be an equal amount of negatives (post-converted into 3D, Cameron Diaz as window dressing, Columbia’s firing of Stephen Chow as writer/director/Kato, Seth Rogen as a f**king superhero). Rather than doing that, I’m just going to drop these Korean teaser posters on you and call it a day. Okay?

Special thanks to /film for pointing out that the new Wile E Coyote 3D toon COYOTE FALLS is online and that you don’t have to sit through CATS AND DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE (it was attached to theatrical prints of that steamer) to watch it. Yay!

PETER JACKSON GOES RED FOR THE HOBBIT 3D

Honestly, I thought that it was already common knowledge that Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT was going to be in 3D. Apparently, I was wrong. Maybe I thought the rumors were truth or the other way around, but the flick (actually, it’s two movies) is going to be filmed in 3D with the ever-popular RED camera.

3D POST-CONVERTED INDIANA JONES?!? GEORGE LUCAS HAS CHOSEN POORLY

Blue Sky Disney is reporting that the Indiana Jones movies are up for the 3D post-conversion two dollar special. Word has it that all four of the Indy films will be converted and re-released into theaters separately in order to maximize the fanboy milking. This will, no doubt, be followed by an eventual release of the series on Blu-Ray, in both standard 2D and 3D editions (gotta get that extra milk!).

Between this and the already announced STAR WARS conversion, one has to wonder what other George Lucas properties might benefit from the process?

PG-13 AND CHRISTIAN CHRISTIANSEN OUT OF HELLRAISER REBOOT; HARD R AND MY BLOODY VALENTINE DUO IN

For about two seconds earlier this week, there was a rumor that Dimension was planning on bringing back the HELLRAISER franchise with a teen-centric PG-13 reboot. Fans freaked out, the skies went dark, Jesus wept, and basically everything went to shit for about two seconds. Thankfully, that was just a rumor and the truth is a much happier tale.

STYD is reporting that director Patrick Lussier and writer Todd Farmer have been tapped to bring Pinhead and the Cenobites back to the big-screen with a full-blown 3D reboot. And while I’m usually opposed to 3D movies, these are the guys who brought us MY BLOODY VALENTINE and the upcoming DRIVE ANGRY. In other words, they know how to good 3D horror as opposed to post-converted junk like MY SOUL TO TAKE.

GRIM AND GRITTY DOESN’T EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THE NEW POTTER POSTERS

Because all I know is HARRY POTTER, I’m here again to being you some Potter-Power (like an energy bar, but it gives you the strength to carry on until Nov 19)! Newly released are some posters to make you drool in the glory that is HARRY POTTER. Though, if you’re not a POTTER-fan, you can still enjoy these because posters in general are a wonderful thing: they give you a nice appetizer (like trailers) so that you can get more of an idea of what you’re getting into. Also, they’re kinda pretty to look at. Ooo, shiny. Anyways, on to the posters-at-hand…

IT’S OFFICIAL: KATE BECKINSALE IS BACK FOR UNDERWORLD 4

It’s official: Kate Beckinsale will return as Selene for UNDERWORLD 4. It was rumored for awhile there and I actually thought it had been made official, but apparently it hadn’t and now it has. No word yet on whether Beckinsale’s hubby Len Wiseman (who directed the first two UNDERWORLD pics) will return behind the camera, but it is known that Sony is going 3D with the new installment. Beckinsale in skin-tight latex in 3D? Yes, please!

PREIST 3D CONTINUES RIDING ON THE “MEH” TRAIN WITH A SLEW OF CHARACTER POSTERS

PREIST 3D has gotten itself some character banners and boy are they boring. Sorry, but this flick just isn’t doing it for me. Maybe it’s Paul Bettany doing his dour holy savior thing again after LEGION (and for the same director, no less) or maybe it’s the patchwork feel of the movie, but something ain’t right here.

Doesn’t help much that these posters are bland as hell. I’d have never guessed that Bettany was playing a vampire killer after seeing THIS preview. Hell, looked like he was dispatching of rejects from I AM LEGEND. And what’s with the boring descriptors? BLACK HAT? KIDNAPPED? THE LAW? WARRIOR? And is it just me or does this flick feel like it’s ripping off the game DAMNATION? Maybe with a little bit of ODDWORLD: STRANGER’S WRATH thrown in for good measure?

RESIDENT EVIL GOES FOR THE DOUBLE-TAP WITH NEW 3D CG SEQUEL DAMNATION

Anyone remember RESIDENT EVIL: DEGENERATION? It was a CG flick released back in 2008 that was a sequel to the video game series rather than the live-action movies and apparently it did pretty well. Actually played in theaters in Japan from what I’ve heard, but it went direct-to-video here in the States (after a VERY limited run in theaters). I remember seeing it, but don’t recall much about it other than it wasn’t half bad but it felt very much like a one-off.

Well, turns out that I was wrong. Not about the quality, but rather the one-off status. Sony Entertainment and Capcom are teaming up again to bring audiences a sequel called RESIDENT EVIL: DAMMNATION, according to Arrow In The Head. And for those keeping count, that now officially makes two RESIDENT EVIL film franchises existing at the same time. Has any other franchise had TWO film series at once?
