Film Bites: Check Out A Super-Short Sneak Peek At THE AVENGERS
There’s about three and a half seconds of footage from THE AVENGERS snuggled away in the vid after the jump. Nothing spectacular, mostly just behind-the-scenes shots showcasing all the various members, but any official footage is good footage.
The rest is…well, a commercial for the upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Blu-Ray and DVD release. Why am I posting this? Just because. No reason. Dug the movie, plan on buying it when it comes out and I think you should too. Do I really need more of a reason than that?

Albert Hughes Planning A Trip To MOTOR CITY, Wants Chris Evans To Join Him
Twitch is reporting that director Albert Hughes (who recently bailed on the AKIRA reboot) and producer Joel Silver (who recently ousted Thomas Jane from Walter Hill’s headshot because he was “too white”) are teaming up to bring Chad St John’s MOTOR CITY to the big screen. Chris Evans is in talks to star. Here’s a helpful pull quote to get this piece moving along:
Warner Brothers and Hughes are eyeing a January 2012 start date for Motor City. Based on a 2009 Black List script by Chad St John – who made the prestigious Black List twice that year – Motor City is a revenge film about a small time crook who is framed and sent to jail only to go after those who put him there upon release. And get this: Reports from the time Motor City made the Black List say the film contains only a single line of dialogue in the entire script.
Yes, you read that right, MOTOR CITY supposedly only features one line of dialogue. Is it too early to already declare this one a bomb and move on? I mean, seriously, would you actually pay to go see a silent movie? I might simply because I dig silent pictures and I’d get a kick out of seeing a major studio actually take a chance with an interesting concept (the film was sold as “a silent revenge movie”), but I’m not the average moviegoer. The average moviegoer (IE Middle America) is likely to not only reject a silent movie but also demand their money back.

SDCC 2010: Marvel Assembles THE AVENGERS!
One of the best things about a Comic Con is the freebies. Every major booth and showcase seems to have them and fans are more than willing to gobble them up. Unfortunately, if you can’t make it to Con then you miss out on all these cool little exclusives and end up having to buy them on Ebay months down the line for ridiculous prices which is a f**king crock because they were free in the first place and let’s not even get me started on this subject…
…moving along. Marvel gave out mini-posters this year. Mini-posters with concept art showcasing the entire cast of THE AVENGERS. Seven posters total that, when linked together, form a giant pre-production mural of geeky goodness of which the likes the world has never seen. Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Captain America (Chris Evans) show off new costumes, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) reveals his, The new Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) makes his big debut and the S.H.I.E.L.D crew (That’s Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson and newcomer Cobie Smunders as Agent Maria Hill) show off their sweet new ride (The S.H.I.E.L.D helicarrier). So much geeky deliciousness!

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
Of all the superhero movies coming out this summer, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER is the one I‘ve been worried about. I was worried that it would be rejected by audiences who would find the idea of a patriotic hero to be hackneyed and silly. I was terrified that audiences would ignore and reject the RAIDERS-esque vibe that Joe Johnston was aiming for and shovel the film in with other similarly-themed retro-hero pics such as SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and THE ROCKETEER (which Johnston also helmed). Most of all, I was worried that this version of Cap would suck as badly, if not worse, than the previous film incarnations fans have had to endure over the years.
I was also worried about Chris Evans as Cap. Don’t get me wrong, I think Evans a fantastic actor and his work in the comic film genre (Six adaptations total including roles in SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD, THE LOSERS and PUSH) is quite admirable. Thing is, I associate him with Johnny Storm in the FANTASTIC FOUR. I’m pretty sure that most people do. And Johnny (aka The Human Torch) is to Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) as night as to day. That is to say that they are completely different and his excellent work as Torch (easily the best part of both FANTASTIC flicks) had me terrified about what he would bring to Cap. Would the most straight-laced, pure and patriotic of all the Marvel heroes be given a smart-ass makeover?
Turns out those worries were totally unfounded. Movie made a mint at the box office over the weekend and rightfully so because CAPTAIN AMERICA rocks. I’d almost declare it the best superhero movie of the summer, but I can‘t. I say “almost” because X-MEN: FIRST CLASS still has it beat, but Cap does come awful close to usurping it. I actually might end up liking this flick more than FIRST CLASS in the long run but I’ve only seen it once and I can’t really make that level of a judgment call without having a few more screenings under my belt. I’d definitely say that the two are pretty much tied for now.
CAPTAIN AMERICA (I’ll be ditching the unnecessary FIRST AVENGER moniker for the remainder of this review) is without a doubt the most complete film in the current Marvel Studios catalog. Johnston doesn’t approach the material as a comic book or as a some pseudo-prequel to next summer’s THE AVENGERS but as a real film. I know that’s a strange thing to say but comic movies tend to usually suffer from too much focus on the origin of the hero and not enough on an actual story or too much story and not enough origin or too many villains and not enough hero or even sometimes not enough of any of that and all your left with is a bunch of flashy visuals. You know this, I know this, movies like GREEN LANTERN and GHOST RIDER have suffered because of this. Cap, on the other hand, manages to find that magic sweet spot that perfectly balances origin, villain and plot.

Come And Listen To A Preview Of Alan Silvestri’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Score
A bit of Alan Silvestri’s score for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER premiered on WQXR over the weekend weekend and…well, it’s awesome. Really awesome. Has a great old-school vibe to it. No synth rock or wailing guitars here. Just lots of horns, violins and brass. Love it. Reminds me a little of the score for THE ROCKETEER which probably was intentional considering Joe Johnston directed both flicks.

Film Bites: The New CAPTAIN AMERICA Trailer Makes Me Want To Shout “America, F**k Yeah!”
Sorry for the massive amount of trailers recently, but the last week was a weak one for actual movie news. I mean, seriously, SPY KIDS 4 is bringing back “Smell-O-Vision”? Michael Bay is prepping ultra-bright prints of TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON to combat the complaints that 3D movies are “too dark”? CARS 2 is the worst reviewed Pixar movie ever? Those aren’t stories, they’re sound bites. Little bits of info that don’t need much in the way of elaboration that can be summed up in a sentence or less. I don’t need to waste bandwidth on that.
What I need to waste bandwidth on is a new trailer for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER! Get ready to have your face rocked and your patriotism cup filled! America, f**k yeah! I love that Steve Rogers is a hero before he ever gets an ounce of the Super Soldier Serum in his system. Brings chills. Looks like THOR and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS have a new competitor in the race for “Best Superhero Movie Of The Summer”.

Posterized: Trade Expo Reveals THE AVENGERS
With the Licensing International Expo underway in Vegas, I think it is safe to say that some serious sneak peeks at upcoming blockbusters are going to flood your eyeballs the next couple of days. First up, THE AVENGERS. Yeah, Marvel and Joss Whedon’s uber-blockbuster (set for release May 2012) featuring Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). Please note that the following image is NOT a one-sheet or some teaser poster, but rather a sales image used to rustle interest from toy manufacturers and merchandising folk.
That having been said…yay. Geek overload kicked in about an hour ago when I first saw this and hasn’t stopped since. Click on the pic to check out the first image from THE AVENGERS…
Posterized: New CAPTAIN AMERICA Character Sheets Fully Reveal Hugo Weaving As Red Skull
With THOR finally starting to cool down at the box office, the time has come for Marvel Studios to focus on their other big summer pic CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. You might note that Marvel put all the marketing for Cap on hold while Thor burned up movie screen. Bit of a smart dumb move, if you ask me. On one hand, slowing down the Cap train allowed for Thor to take focus with audiences and let the film become a big hit. On the other, other genre pics like X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and TRANSFORMERS 3 have swooped in and stole some of Cap’s thunder.
Oh well, what’s done is done. Marvel is back on the CAPTAIN AMERICA marketing push again and what better way to muster up interest than by releasing a trio of character one-sheets including one that gives audiences their first clear look at the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving)?

SPOILER ALERT: Captain America And Nick Fury Spotted Last Weekend In NYC
Director Joe Johnston and company did a little last minute filming for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER last weekend in NYC and Eyeprime was there to snap some pics. Be warned, the following pics are a little spoilery for those who don’t know anything about Cap. To those who do know about the character, these pics (and the vid) won’t be much of a surprise.
