Film Bites: The First Official Trailer For CAPTAIN AMERICA Is Here!
The CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER trailer is finally here and all I can say is that it was well worth the wait. This is a near-perfect trailer and I have no complaints about it.
Well, actually, I do have one: Was it totally necessary to have Tommy Lee Jones narrate the entire thing? I couldn’t help but be reminded of the teaser trailer for THE FUGITIVE. I kept waiting for him to wrap up with “Your fugitive’s name is Steve Rogers. Go get him.”
A small complaint for an otherwise amazing trailer. July 22nd can’t get here soon enough. Click on the pic to check it out…
New Hi-Res CAPTAIN AMERICA Pics Compliment The Super Bowl Teaser Trailer Quite Nicely
As if the Super Bowl teaser for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER wasn’t badass enough, Bleeding Cool went and found a slew of hi-res pics from this month’s issue of EMPIRE that bring even more coolness. Easily the crown jewel of the bunch is the full-on shot of Chris Evans in the suit. Love the fact that it feels real and is period appropriate (the flick is mostly set during WWII) while still kinda futuristic. Very cool.

First Look (Again): Chris Evans As CAPTAIN AMERICA – THE FIRST AVENGER
The following really isn’t really a news story, as it as more of an update to a story posted last week.
Remember that grainy EW pic of Chris Evans as Captain America? Well, Marvel fixed the grainy issue and dropped not one, but two, hi-res pics of Cap onto the internet for your viewing pleasure. The first one is obviously just a clearer look at the pic from last week, but the second one actually features a tiny bit of Cap action. Nothing too crazy, but cool nonetheless.
The most interesting thing about these pics is the commandos standing behind Cap. Guess I was too focused on Cap’s uniform when I first saw this pic, but now all I can focus on is those robo-commandos. Are they supposed to be the Howling Commandos? Or maybe The Invaders?
Or maybe they are some of Red Skull’s goons? They do seem to be surrounding Cap which would lead me to believe that they are bad guys, but I’d really like to know who they are. I mean, just check out that armor. Considering CAPTAIN AMERICA – THE FIRST AVENGER is set in the 40s, it is a little shocking to see almost Iron Man-esque levels of tech being used.

First Look: Chris Evans As CAPTAIN AMERICA
Feels like two seconds ago I was lamenting a bit about how Marvel Studios has yet to fully reveal Captain America with a nice hi-res official pic. Well, guess what? They still haven’t (unless you count the insanely Photoshopped EW cover from a few months back) and what we have here is yet another grainy set photo (also from EW).
Granted, it is a little better than the average set photo due to the fact that it shows off Cap’s costume pretty well. And yes, he’s sporting wings on the side of his helmet so all you purists can calm the f**k down. You wouldn’t believe how many people online have been losing their shit because “Cap’s helmet doesn’t have any wings!”. You know why Marvel has kept the wings in the dark for so long? Because they look silly. What works in the comics doesn’t always translate well to the big screen. Just ask GHOST RIDER.

Massive CAPTAIN AMERICA – THE FIRST AVENGER News: The Cosmic Cube! Red Skull Concept Art! Teaser Trailer Delayed?
Tons of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER news hitting this week. I’m guessing this is mostly due to the fact that the first trailer is set to hit any day now, but more on that in a bit. The first bit of news I’d like to discuss involves the Ark Of The Cove…er, I mean, the Cosmic Cube.
That’s right, people. The above pic is Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull holding the almighty Cosmic Cube. Found the pic over at CHUD who found it in this month’s issue of SFX and what else is there to say? It’s a pretty cool pic of a pic and it’s a cube. Yay.
I’m guessing that the CG guys are gonna rub a little funk on this before the actual movie comes out. I mean, seriously, it’s just a white cube. Cap fans will know what it is (as will most true blue Marvel aficionados), but I’m not sure that the average moviegoer has any idea what they are looking at. To the uninitiated, this is simply a pic of Agent Smith (or Elrond, depending on your genre tastes) fixing to whip together some stew for his Nazi stormtroopers using a big-ass bouillon cube. I can almost hear him saying, “And I shall create the most powerful stew the world has ever seen!”.

Massive CAPTAIN AMERICA Spoilers Hit Online; Red Skull Believed To Be Behind The Leak
Ready for some CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER spoilers? Well, if you’re not, you probably need to leave this page promptly because I’m about to drop a metric shit-ton of spoilage right on top of you, courtesy of Daily Blam.
Of course, all of the following needs to be taken with a grain of salt. There’s no confirmation that any of the following is true or just pure fanwank. But considering the quantity and the authenticity of the spoilers, I’m apt to believe that the following is true. Which pretty much means that a good portion of the flick is about to be massively spoiled for you. Continue onward only if you wish to be spoiled.

CAPTAIN AMERICA HAS FINALLY BEEN SEMI-FULLY REVEALED! YAY?
A couple of months back, I wondered whether or not audiences are ready for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Marvel is banking on the idea that any superhero flick set inside the universe established by IRON MAN is going to naturally be a hit, but my argument was that Cap seems a little quaint for today’s more jaded moviegoer.
Patriotism isn’t too hip with people today (hasn’t really been since about 2004) and Cap is all about patriotism. That is the reason I think this flick might fail. And considering Paramount recently handed over THE AVENGERS and IRON MAN 3 to Disney, I’m apt to believe they think the same.
I will say, however, that these new pics of Cap posted over at EW are pretty great and seem to promise a really good picture. One that might bomb spectacularly, but a really good picture nonetheless. It does crack me up that Paramount is still playing coy with the big reveal of Cap in the helmet. It’s the same tactic they are using with the early promotion of THOR. I’m guessing that helmets aren’t too hip with test audiences.

OP/ED: WHY I THINK CAPTAIN AMERICA MIGHT FLOP (NOW WITH UBER-COOL SET PICS)
As much as I personally dig the character, I can’t help but feel like CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER is going to be a massive bomb. Mind you, this is more of a gut feeling and certainly not based on any of talent involved. Hell, if we were to base this on the talent involved, I’d say that this flick is going to be a moderate sized hit.
After all, this is a movie being produced by a company that is currently on a hot streak (Marvel Studios) that is being helmed by a solid journeyman director with geek ties (Joe Johnston who has worked on or helmed movies such as THE ROCKETEER, the original STAR WARS trilogy and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK) and it features some very good actors (Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Toby Jones, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Samuel L Jackson). All of that equals up to a movie that should do well.
Unfortunately, my gut feeling says “FLOP”. Click on the pic to find out why and check out some uber-cool set photos…
PREPARE TO FEEL THE WRATH OF THE LEAGUE OF EVIL EXES
Considering Michael Cera is box office poison as of late (did you see YOUTH IN REVOLT? PAPER HEART? YEAR ONE?), I guess it makes complete sense that Universal is promoting SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD using very little of him. Case in point, six new character posters that feature Ramona Flowers’ seven evil exes. You’ll note that Cera is nowhere to be found here, not even a name above a title. Guess that’s what happens when you float for a few years on a shtick that was already getting old when he was on ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT.
