GANGSTER SQUAD Character Posters And Trailer: No Names, No Badges, No Mercy

Warner Bros has released six posters, nine banners, and a sweet new theatrical trailer for Rueben Fleischer’s THE GANGSTER SQUAD.

Originally set to hit theaters this past October, SQUAD was, due to the events of the Aurora shooting, pushed to January 11th, 2013 so the finale, a shoot-out in a movie theater, could be removed and reshot. Reshoots took place last August and bits of the new finale, which now takes place in Chinatown, can be glimpsed in the new trailer.

Broken Record: I’m still not sure what to think of this flick. Part of me — the part that loves old-school “cops VS gangster” pics – hopes/thinks director Rueben Fleischer (let us love ZOMBIELAND and forgive 30 MINUTES OR LESS) and his absolutely fan-f*cking-tastic cast (Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Michael Peña, Frank Grillo, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Robert Patrick, Nick Nolte, and a red hot Emma Stone) will knock this one out of the park and deliver the next L.A. CONFIDENTIAL or THE UNTOUCHABLES. That would be awesome.

The other part of me — the part that gets nauseous when Hollywood attempts to make the old-school gangster genre “hip” by favoring a hot young cast (see THE BLACK DAHLIA and MOBSTERS), a hip-hop soundtrack (I really hope the music cues in the trailer are temporary) and gobs of flashy visuals (see PUBLIC ENEMIES, HOODLUM, and ROAD TO PERDITION) over a solid, non-derivative script — is concerned SQUAD will end up being an equally unsuccessful rehash of 1996’s MULHOLLAND FALLS which, outside of some wonderfully gratuitous Jennifer Connelly nudity, wasn’t all that great to begin with. That would be less awesome.

Theatrical Review: CRAZY STUPID LOVE

Being that it took me a LONG time to get around to seeing CRAZY STUPID LOVE, I’m going to make this review short and sweet. Actually, I’m going to give you the best reason to see this right now and right up front: Ryan Gosling. I’ve always been a little on the fence about this guy (Is he Hollywood? Is he indie? Is is he still a Mouseketeer?) and thought maybe he was a touch overrated, but this flick changed all that. Gosling’s performance as the ultimate old-school ladies man is fantastic. Overshadows everyone else in the movie. That’s not to say that the other cast members are bad– just that all the other actors and actresses are playing catch-up to Gosling who steals every single scene he’s in.

If I could end my review here and simply say “Ryan Gosling has finally arrived!” I would, but I can’t. Need to hit up some of the plot and drop a little more info. Otherwise I’ll be making a trend of “massive bold statement” reviews and I’m pretty sure nobody wants that. Or maybe you do? Do you? Probably not. I’m pretty sure you don’t. Who am I talking to? Oh yeah, myself. Let’s move on.

Written by Dan Fogelman and directed by the duo who brought audiences I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS (which I’m almost positive you never got around to seeing), CRAZY STUPID LOVE doesn’t really break any new ground in terms of rom-coms or comedy. It does what it does well, but seems a little overstuffed at points and a touch meandering. Flick is funny, mind you. Real funny. Can’t have a movie with Steve Carell, Emma Stone and a kick-ass performance from Gosling and not be funny. The main problem here is that the focus of the film shifts too frequently and you’ll find yourself wanting to get back to storylines that have basically been abandoned.

THE HELP

Yes, I’m seriously about to drop a review of THE HELP starring Emma Stone and Viola Davis. I’m as shocked as you are. And yes, I realize that this isn’t exactly a movie I’d normally review. This site really isn’t a site for dramas or “important” films. Adamantium Bullet is a genre/geek site, plain and simple. If you’re like me, you come here for news about sci-fi epics, horror movies, action extravaganzas and fantasy flicks. You come for reviews of those kind of movies, not the other stuff. The other stuff, things like THE HELP, are more suited elsewhere. Maybe on a site your momma reads or some mainstream fluffy blog like…hell, I don’t know. I just know that this kind of flick and a review of it doesn’t seem to fit on a site mostly devoted to boobs, blood and bullets (preferably of the adamantium variety).

That having been said, here’s my small review of THE HELP. I should note that I didn’t see this movie of my own accord. Not really my bag, you see. I’m not a fan of movies that white-wash the civil rights movement. Scratch that, I’m not a fan of movies that white-wash anything. If you’re going to do a movie about civil rights and segregation down South in the 60s and going to tell it from the point of view of “The Help” (the hard-working black maids that worked for white households) then tell it from their point of view. Don’t filter it through uber-white Emma Stone.

Sony Already Planning THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 For Summer 2014

Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures has marked May 2nd, 2014 as the release date for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Yes, you read that right. A sequel to a reboot that is still eleven (!) months from hitting theaters has already been greenlit and been given a release date.

Stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are expected to return. Unless, of course, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN tanks and Sony has to reboot and recast it again. After all, SPIDEY 2.0 was born out of the fact that Sony had to go something with the Spider-Man property before the rights reverted back to Marvel. In a way, that 2014 release date could either mean you’ll be seeing a sequel to movie you haven’t seen yet or a reboot of a movie that you’ve seen but haven’t seen the newest version of. Yay.

Film Bites: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

God, I really do hate the teaser trailer for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. I know, I know, I’m supposed to be all diplomatic and give this unnecessary reboot a fair shake and all. I mean, this is the first look at the flick. The final product could be drastically different, right? RIGHT? And yeah, I did say earlier this week that I would accept that this is happening (a reboot of a franchise that is barely a decade old) and that I need to focus on the posit….grrrrraahhh. No. Can’t do it. Won’t do it.

Know why? It’s because this looks like sh*t. It does. Peter Parker isn’t supposed to be some emo kid with Edward Cullen hair who loves hoodies and enjoys a good cry. Peter is supposed to be clever, witty, smart– a happy-go-lucky nerd who, while socially incept, is secretly cool enough to score a date with the hottest girl in school. This new Parker (played by Andrew Garfield who I still think is a little too old for the role) seems less awkward and more “Mommy and Daddy left me. Aunt and Uncle don’t get me. Everybody at school hates me. Did you know that the directions on how to make a pipe-bomb are on Wikipedia and I that recently bought a used AK-47 off of Ebay?”.

Dark and depressing is NOT Spider-Man. That’s the very reason that SPIDER-MAN 3 is considered by most fans to be the worst of the series: It was too dark and depressing. Nobody wants to see Peter/Spidey depressed, getting his emo on and slapping around Mary-Jane. Batman is dark, Daredevil is dark, The Punisher is dark, but not Spidey. There’s a reason he’s called “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”.

And don’t even get me started on all that parkour stuff towards the end. Looks like Sony saved a few pennies by cribbing leftover shots from MIRROR’S EDGE and re-skinning with Spidey and NYC. It’s a little embarrassing really. The whole teaser is just awful and has definitely lowered my expectations.

Get Caught In The Web Of These Amazing Pics From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Hmmm…THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. What to say? I love the cast (Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Sally Field, and SOUL MAN C. Thomas Howell? What‘s not to love?), dig the director (Marc Webb brought us 500 DAYS OF SUMMER) and hate the idea. I hate that Sony is rebooting Spidey less than ten years after Sam Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN hit theaters. Too soon, as most would say. Way too f**king soon, as I would say.

Nag, nag, nag, I know. How many times have I bitched about the slew of reboots Hollywood has in the works? And how many times has many incessant nagging gone unnoticed? I’d say a good bit. My word is…well, inconsequential. Meaning that I really just need to deal with the fact that this is being rebooted. Everything is going to eventually be rebooted eventually and the time has come for Peter Parker.

Jesse Eisenberg Worries That ZOMBIELAND 2 Delay Might Render It “Less Relevant”. Huh?

I knew I was justified in my dislike of THE SOCIAL NETWORK. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it. Oh wait, that really has nothing to do with the following piece…or does it?

Anyways, ZOMBIELAND 2. Remember when this was immediately promised by all the folks who brought us the first film? Yeah, looks like that promise might go unfulfilled. The first nail in the coffin was about a year ago when Woody Harrelson expressed his distaste for sequels and implied that he wasn’t interested in doing one. Then came word that the studio had grown disinterested in a follow-up and that all of the major players had moved on to other projects (director Ruben Fleischer is attached to THE GANGSTER SQUAD, Emma Stone has seven movies coming out including the reboot of SPIDER-MAN and Abigail Breslin is quickly growing out of the role).

The final nail in the coffin, kind of, seems to have been delivered by none other than Jesse Eisenberg. While the following isn’t exactly him saying that the project is dead, it basically is just that. Dude can’t play around in quirky genre films forever (especially considering that Best Actor nod he got for NETWORK) and…well, just click on the pic and you’ll see what I mean…

Emma Stone Brings A Little Bit Of Gwen Stacy To The Pages Of GLAMOUR

I may not be totally on-board with Emma Stone having blonde hair, but damn if she doesn’t look good in these pics from this month’s issue of GLAMOUR. Definitely can see why director Marc Webb picked her to play Gwen Stacy in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN now. My only request is that she return to her redhead ways once her fling with hipster Spidey is through. Okay?
