DAREDEVIL Is Officially Back With Marvel
Kevin Fiege confirmed to Newsarama at an IRON MAN 3 press junket Monday that the rights to the DAREDEVIL franchise have reverted back to Marvel Studios.
Considering Fox is the studio that bungled both the 2003 film adaptation with Ben Affleck (they forced director Mark Steven Johnson to trim the hard R violence and dark subject matter and replace it with goopy romance and Evanescence tunes) and 2005 spin-off ELEKTRA (Jennifer Garner was good, the film was not), I see the rights reverting back to Marvel Studios as nothing but a good thing.
Considering Fox is also the studio that wasted nearly seven years attempting to trying to reboot a character they clearly had no idea how to reboot (their most recent attempt would’ve had David Slade and Jason Statham headlining as Matt Murdock / Daredevil and possibly Vin Diesel co-starring as Kingpin), I see the rights reverting back to Marvel as nothing but a good thing.

Film Bites: Fox Is Determined To Spoil Every Moment Of RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
I’ve always been a fan of the PLANET OF THE APES series. Whenever a lazy Saturday or Sunday would arise, my Dad and I used to get the VHS tapes we had of all of the original films and we’d watch them back-to-back. Damn near perfect circle of movies and those memories of me just hanging out with the old man and geeking out over the techie/nerdy bits of each film are some of the best I have from my childhood.
We dug all the APES stuff. We watched the live-action show and thought it was okay. Saw the cartoon version and thought it was weird. I’ve even got a soft spot for the Tim Burton reboot. The end of that flick didn’t make much sense but it did spurn a couple of nerdy plot conversations with my Dad. Thanks for that, Burton.
Nostalgia aside, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES looks awesome. I’ve said it time and time again on here and probably will a bunch more before the movie hits on August 5th. The only problem I can see with the film is that James Franco looks bored. Like maybe this was a paycheck pic for him. Franco aside, this looks to be a worthy addition to the APES canon and I really, really hope it spawns a big-screen revival for this once-powerhouse franchise.

James Mangold To Direct THE WOLVERINE
Deadline is reporting that James Magnold has been hired to direct THE WOLVERINE starring Hugh Jackman. Magnold is the director behind such movies as KNIGHT & DAY, 3:10 TO YUMA and WALK THE LINE. He’ll be working from a script by Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS).You might remember that BLACK SAWN helmer Darren Aronofsky was originally set to direct this before abruptly dropping out last March citing “personal reasons”. Personal reasons that might have included knocking up Natalie Portman.
Mangold is an okay choice, I guess. Don’t really see anything on his resume that screams that he’s the guy for what is basically a reboot of the WOLVERINE franchise (word has it that this new installment doesn’t reference what came before or the recent X-MEN: FIRST CLASS). But, then again, same could be said for original X-MEN director Bryan Singer and FIRST CLASS director Matthew Vaughn. Neither really had any experience with this genre and both did a fine job. Might be the same way with Mangold.

TRAINING DAY Scribe David Ayer To Write/Direct Reboot Of COMMANDO
Producer John Davis recently revealed to Collider that David Ayer has written a reboot of the Arnold Schwarzenegger action pic COMMANDO for Fox with the intention of direct…hey, wait a sec, haven’t I already written about this? I have! April 2010, Deadline broke the news of David Ayer being hired to write and direct a COMMANDO reboot. Oh well, old news is news nonetheless. Click on the pic to read the full story…
Film Bites: Evolution Brings Revolution In RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
Much like the first trailer for RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, this new one seems to have only one problem: James Franco. Dude is a fantastic actor and all (anyone who’s seen 127 HOURS or PINEAPPLE EXPRESS can attest to that, folks who’ve seen WHATEVER IT TAKES might argue) but he just seems bored here. Maybe this was paycheck picture? Maybe he didn’t know what he was signing up for? Or maybe he didn’t get used to acting against green screens? Who knows?
What I do know is that, outside of Franco and the gratuitous King Kong cameo at the 1:40 mark, this flick looks like ten bags of awesome. New trailer only reinforces that. Best moment hits at 1:58 when this glossy hi-tech (WETA did a fantastic job with the CG here) reboot goes all old-school APES on us. Brought chills. Love it.

FIRST CLASS Trailer Highlights Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique; Ignores Kevin Bacon
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS looks awesome. Plain and simple. I really don’t have much else to say on the matter. Well…I guess I could mention the fact that the series appears to have entered reboot stage and Fox is being coy about it. Oh and I guess I should mention that all of the posters released thus far (save for the international ones) have sucked balls. The trailers have all rocked (I still get cold chills from THIS teaser), but the posters have been absolutely awful.
So, yeah, not much to say outside of that. Here’s the official trailer for the flick. Lots of new footage here, mostly centering around the students and Magneto’s gradual submission to the dark side. Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique seems to be getting more focus (Been wondering when Fox was going to realize they had a recent Oscar-nominee in their cast) as is January Jones’ cleavage. Guess Fox is going for the teen boys by playing up the sexy. Not a bad idea. Might backfire, might work, never really know when using boobs to promote a movie.

Photoshop Ruins Another FIRST CLASS Poster
I honestly don’t believe that there are words strong enough to describe how hideous this new one-sheet for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is. It’s almost as if Fox isn’t even trying, like they already know that audiences are going to flock to this one regardless of the awful the f**king poster is. They’re right…but it doesn’t mean they should be allowed to get away with Photoshop atrocities like this.

Film Bites: Five Seconds Of Monkey Business From RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
This is a five-second long look at RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES starring James Franco, Tom Felton (first big post-POTTER pic for Draco) and Andy Serkis. There’s no Franco here, just a look at one ape. An ape that looks very suspicious and happens to have been designed by WETA, but an ape nonetheless. Not very exciting, I know. But considering Fox is playing it real coy with this flick and has yet to even release a stinking teaser poster (RISE opens, I kid you not, August 5th), I’ll take what I can get.

Darren Aronofsky Has Left THE WOLVERINE
The dream is dead, people: Darren Aronofsky is no longer directing THE WOLVERINE.
The official word is that Aronofsky (fresh from box office success and Oscar glory with BLACK SWAN) didn’t want to spend an entire year filming in Japan (dude recently broke up with actress Rachel Weisz and has a son with her) away from his family. There’s also some speculation that the recent Tsunami and subsequent nuclear crisis has spooked him. Either way, I get where he’s coming from and I would’ve dropped out too.
Too bad Fox didn’t just opt to build some big-ass Japanese sets here in the States and keep him onboard. Early word says that Christopher (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) McQuarrie’s script is absolutely fantastic and star Hugh Jackman has been bulking the hell out (6000 calories a day!) to prep for the early Spring shoot. I’m guessing with Aronofsky’s departure and with what’s going on in Japan this entire project has pretty much been thrown into turnaround.

ECLIPSE Director David Slade Hired To Helm Fox’s DAREDEVIL Reboot/Continuation
I feel kinda sorry for David Slade. Dude had a promising start as a filmmaker, what with the amazing HARD CANDY being his debut and the very underrated 30 DAYS OF NIGHT as his follow-up. That’s an impressive start to a career, right? One would even say that Slade is a director to keep an eye on.
Then came THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE. Yeah, it made money and definitely boosted his profile. But since ECLIPSE hit, Slade has been floating around as a journeyman/director-for-hire, attaching himself to projects that seem to go nowhere. First came that Dracula prequel/midquel thing THE VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER which seems to have dipped into development hell. Same can be said for the proposed reboot of THE SHADOW he’s attached to.
To make matters worse, Fox just hired Slade to helm a reboot of DAREDEVIL. Actually, that’s not right. Fox hired him to direct a “continuation” of DAREDEVIL which means…I don’t know. The implication is that this won’t be a reboot and will actually be more of a sequel. However, Ben Affleck is reportedly NOT going to be involved nor are any of the crew from the original, so how can this be anything but a reboot?
The Variety piece where this story originated is light on details other than to say there is no writer attached to the project at the moment, the film is a “continuation” and that Slade is directing. That’s the point of this story.
