T5 News: Director Justin Lin Bows Out, James Cameron Unofficially Involved

Deadline is reporting that director Justin Lin has dropped out of TERMINATOR 5 in order to focus on FAST SIX. You might recall that he had to drop out of Summit’s HIGHLANDER reboot recently for the same reason but there is a catch here: Lin is willing to make T5 his next project if producer Megan Ellison and star Arnold Schwarzenegger are willing to wait.

David Fincher’s HEAVY METAL Is Dead. Love Live Robert Rodriguez’s HEAVY METAL!

David Fincher’s proposed reboot of HEAVY METAL is dead. Love live Robert Rodriguez’s HEAVY METAL!

Yes, it’s true, Fincher’s proposed vision of a animated anthology film that would’ve featured segments directed by James Cameron and Guillermo Del Toro has went bust. No official reason was given as to why Fincher left the project. All that is known at the moment is that METAL publisher Kevin Eastman (one of the guys who created the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES) has teamed with Rodriguez and that the film will be produced under Rodriguez’s Quick Draw banner.

Can’t say I’m really broken up about this. Fincher is an amazing talent, but his love affair with HEAVY METAL was an odd one. Never made much sense. There’s nothing in his filmography that would suggest that he was suited for a project of this magnitude.

AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS Trip Canceled; Guillermo Del Toro Books Flight To PACIFIC RIM

Yesterday morning, I09 announced that Guillermo Del Toro’s long-in-development (GDT has been working on it for 15 years!) adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS had finally received the green light from Universal. The flick was set to start filming in June. James Cameron was to produce! Tom Cruise to star! A rumored 150 million dollar budget! 3D! (Cue the fireworks!)

Alas, this announcement (which pretty much was confirmed the rumors and already existing information) turned out to be false and the truth is quite the opposite. The guys over at Criterion Cast contacted GDT himself and the following e-mail conversation occurred:

Me: I’m sure everyone is e-mailing you this question today, but is this June start date for Mountains of Madness true? Got your greenlight?

Guillermo: The opposite- Dead. – G

Ouch. This hurts almost as much as GDT leaving the HOBBIT prequels to start work on this project and the DISNEY DOUBLE DARE YOU series (which was, until it was canceled, to be a series of horror films geared towards families). Hurts almost as much as DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (which GDT produced and wrote) getting bumped off the schedule to the nebulous TBA release date. Dude just can’t seem to catch a break. Seems like every project he has been attached to recently has either been canceled, delayed or put on the back-burner due to funding issues.

David Fincher Reveals His Thoughts On Praise For THE SOCIAL NETWORK; Updates Status Of THE GOON And HEAVY METAL

It should go without saying that David Fincher is one of the best filmmakers working today. This is just fact. You know it, I know it and pretty much anyone who knows anything about movies knows it. His resume reads like a the resume that any filmmaker worth his salt wishes he had. SE7EN, FIGHT CLUB, ZODIAC and THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON are all bonafide classics and even his lesser efforts (lesser because of the script, not because of the film itself) like THE GAME and PANIC ROOM are pretty damn good. Even ALIEN 3 is not without it’s moments (say what you will about that flick, but having Ripley commit suicide was a ballsy f**king decision).

The problem is that THE SOCIAL NETWORK is the movie that most are claiming is Fincher’s best. If you read the site regularly, then you already know that I personally believe that the Facebook flick is incredibly overrated. Matter of fact, I think it is the weakest film on Fincher’s resume. No kidding.

FOX CONFIRMS THAT AVATAR 2 & 3 ARE CAMERON’S NEXT PROJECTS

Despite some heavy offers from other studios (the biggest of which was a Sony-financed Angelina Jolie version of CLEOPATRA), James Cameron has officially decided that AVATAR 2 & 3 will be his next two projects. This bit of info comes directly from the Fox Twitter page, but don’t get too excited just yet.

For one thing, the source article simply mentions that Cameron has made the sequels his next films and that he’ll start writing them early 2011 (with a late 2011 start date for shooting). The key phrase that seems to be missing from the announcement is whether or not he’ll be directing both films. Previous reports seemed to indicate that he would be writing and producing them, but not directing. I’m apt to believe that this is still the case.

TRUE LIES HEADS TO TELEVISION, ALBEIT FIFTEEN YEARS LATE

Deadline is reporting that James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Fox are working on a TRUE LIES television show. Way to be about fifteen years too late, guys.

One of the creators of THE 4400 (a show I’ve never watched) is on-board as the show runner, but other than that, not much else is known. It’s safe to say that none of the original cast will be back and that the show will probably remake the film to serve as a pilot, as is the protocol with these things. Deadline is also saying that the show is being shopped around to all the networks, so it airing on Fox isn’t actually a guarantee.

BOX OFFICE BATTLE: The Weekend Of 08.27.10

Bit of a squeaker at the box office last weekend with both THE LAST EXORCISM and TAKERS coming in neck-and-neck for the top spot. Unfortunately, TAKERS ended up “taking” it from EXORCISM (the Sunday and Monday numbers had EXORCISM winning, but the final Tuesday numbers bumped the Chris Brown starrer into #1) and won the weekend. Yay?

There is a silver lining though. EXORCISM was cheap to produce, really cheap. Like less than 2mil to make and probably a few mil to advertise produce. Basically, it grossing 20.3mil makes it a sure fire hit even if it does suffer the usual 50% drop-off in the second weekend.

From The Vault: PIRANHA PART II – THE SPAWNING

With PIRANHA 3D hitting theaters this Friday, we here at Adamantium Bullet thought this might be a good time to revisit the PIRANHA flicks that came before. Namely, the Joe Dante 1978 original, the horrific 1981 sequel (directed by a then-unknown James Cameron) and the 1995 cable remake.

Today, we check out the much-maligned directorial debut of James Cameron, PIRANHA PART II – THE SPAWNING. Click on the pic to read more…

DEL TORO AND CAMERON JOURNEY TO THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS

After a brief scare with the idea of him possibly directing a HAUNTED MANSION remake, Guillermo Del Toro has eased fan fear by confirming that his next directorial effort will the long-in-development AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. According to Deadline, the pic is being geared up as a big tentpole release that will be filmed and released in 3D. The real shocker here (and the possible reason that Universal greenlit a big budget adaptation of a HP Lovecraft work) is that James Cameron has come on-board to produce, oversee the 3D shoot and possibly lend his name to the marketing materials.

TITANIC IS GOING TO BE RE-RELEASED TO THEATERS IN 3D ON THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE SHIP SINKING

As if it didn’t make enough money the first go round, TITANIC is being re-released to theaters. But wait, there’s more! According to the LA Times, not only is James Cameron planning on re-releasing TITANIC, it’s being converted to 3D. That’s right, the guy who’s been bitching about “2D to 3D conversions” is planning on doing the same to one of his own movies.
