Paramount And Oren Peli Prepping Latino PARANORMAL ACTIVITY Spin-Off

THR is reporting Christopher Landon (writer of DISTURBIA and, ugh, BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE) has been tapped by producers Oren Peli and Jason Blum to helm an untitled Latino-themed supernatural thriller for Paramount. Flick is being described as a “cousin” to the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY series which should come as no surprise considering Peli, Blum and Landon are the guys responsible for the PA trilogy.

Per THR: Landon will write and direct the project, described by sources as a “cousin” to the Paranormal movies but not a sequel, reboot or spinoff. The real kicker is that the movie will be Latino-themed. It will star a Latino cast and will tackle Catholic-based paranormal mythology. It will not, however, be in Spanish. The aim is to make the micro-budgeted movie in the next several months.

Sounds good so far.

Paramount potentially could have the movie ready for an early January 2013 slot. This past January, the studio released the Catholic-centered found-footage horror movie The Devil Inside; it was made for about $1 million and grossed $53 million domestically and $46 million internationally.

Sh*t. Did THE DEVIL INSIDE just get name-checked? Is that what these guys are aiming for? I sure as hell hope not.

I’m sure most horror buffs would be down with a Latino PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. That’s a solid idea. Paramount has already attempting something like this once before with the Japanese-exclusive PA spin-off TOKYO NIGHT and the result wasn’t half-bad. Movie was actually on-par with the second official PA flick. And I’m pretty sure nobody is going to mind if this Latino PA is sprinkled with a healthy dose of Catholic mythology. That serves to accent the concept. Makes the whole “family gets menace by unseen entity” schtick a bit deeper which is good thing.

First Look: Rob Zombie’s THE LORDS OF SALEM

Produced by Oren Peli (the creator of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY), Rob Zombie’s THE LORDS OF SALEM has been quietly ramping up in Massachusetts for a couple of weeks now. Some reports are saying that the movie is already shooting, others are saying that it is still in pre-production. Either way, this project is coming together quick and should be right on track to hit early 2012.

In case you don’t know what LORDS is about, here’s what we know about the plot: The story is about a local DJ who mistakenly unleashes a hellish curse on the town. 300 years earlier on the very streets of Salem that the townspeople walk on today, innocent folks were rounded up from their homes, convicted of being witches and sentenced to death. The Lords of Salem ran the town with an iron fist, but four witches who were tortured and killed in secrecy vowed that one day they would be back for revenge.

After the jump is the first official pic from the movie, courtesy of Rob Zombie’s personal blog. The following note from Zombie himself was attached: “Here it is! The first image from the film THE LORDS OF SALEM and that’s all I will say. Okay, I will say that the scene that involves this face is very painful.”

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY AND FRIDAY THE 13TH LINE UP THEIR NEXT INSTALLMENTS

In the least surprising news of the year, Dread Central has found out that Paramount has greenlit PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3. No word yet who’ll be writing and directing the next installment of the lucrative horror franchise, but it does have a release date: October 21st, 2011.

That’s right, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY just became the new SAW. Difference is, ACTIVITY actually just delivered a quality sequel and if Paramount keeps the concept fresh, they might actually stand a chance at being the first horror franchise to deliver quality yearly sequels. One request though: Don’t do a prequel. I realize that ACTIVITY 2 was a semi-prequel/sequel, but please don’t do the story that started all the chaos. It’s better left to the imagination.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: TOYKO NIGHT GETS POSTERIZED

STYD has premiered the poster for PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: TOKYO NIGHT. For those unaware of this project, Paramount lent the ACTIVITY name to Presidio and they made a sequel exclusively for Japanese audiences. The flick is set to premiere in Japan on November 20th. No word yet on when it will hit the States.

Theatrical Review: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2

From a technical standpoint, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY didn’t need a sequel. Last Halloween’s surprise sleeper hit told a well-worn story (albeit with a new “found footage” twist), did so on a micro budget and it, more or less, wrapped up the story of Katie and Micah. A demon invaded this couple’s home and created a suburban nightmare for the duo until blood was shed. Easy, breezy, end of story. Right?

Wrong.

From a financial standpoint, there was no way Paramount was going to let ACTIVITY be a one-time deal. Grossing nearly 200 million dollars off of a budget of only $15,000, Paramount almost immediately commissioned a sequel and a franchise was born. Not too bad for a movie that changed hands multiple times over the course of three years and was barely released.

So, here we are, one year later and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 is in theaters. Are you shocked? You shouldn’t be. If SAW can churn a sequel every year, surely a “found footage” flick can pump them out at the same rate. The real question here is: Is PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 as good as the original or is it a pathetic cash-in that kills the franchise dead, ala BLAIR WITCH 2: BOOK OF SHADOWS?

ROB ZOMBIE IS HEADING TO SALEM

It took awhile, but Rob Zombie has finally settled on next directorial effort! Yay! And guess what? It’s none of the movies that you were expecting it to be.

In other words, Zombie’s next flick WON’T be a remake of THE BLOB, the long-gestating TYRANNOSAURUS REX, a big-screen version of his comic THE NAIL, HALLOWEEN 3, a feature version of WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE S.S, THE DEVILS REJECTS 2 or WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BARON VON SHOCK. Instead, Deadline is reporting that Zombie will write and direct THE LORDS OF SALEM for Haunted Films (a production company run by the guys who brought us PARANORMAL ACTIVITY).

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: TOKYO NIGHT?!?

Not sure how the following story is legal or if it is even considered an official entry into an established franchise, but here goes…

According to Shock Till You Drop, a studio called Presidio is working on a sequel to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (not to be confused with the actual Paramount-produced sequel hitting theaters this October) called PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: TOKYO NIGHT. This new installment is said to center around a foreign exchange student who apparently, while in San Diego, becomes possessed by the demon in the first film and ends up bringing it back to Tokyo with him. NIGHT is going to follow the first films “found footage” concept, albeit this time it will be told through his video recordings (I’m going to assume this will entail a ton of video blogging).

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 TEASES AUDIENCES, SCARES TWI-HARDS

If you’ve been reading the site for a bit, you know that I love PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Actually called it the “scariest f**king movie I’ve ever seen” and I still stand by that statement. Sure, the current “in” thing to do is bash on this flick, but I won’t. You may love your SAW flicks and cheap horror remakes, but I’ll take a dozen no-budget wonders like ACTIVITY any day.
