Theatrical Review: SALT

SALT is a big summer thriller that really, REALLY wants to be the next BOURNE franchise and nearly succeeds in doing so until a completely brain-dead third act derails the entire film. Fortunately, the movie is entertaining enough to warrant a big screen viewing and star Angelina Jolie does her absolute best with the material at hand, so all is not lost.

SALT GETS NEUTERED FOR THEATRICAL RELEASE, JOLIE EARNS 20MIL

Turns out, SALT (hitting theaters this Friday) might have gone pretty heavily under the knife to get that coveted PG-13 rating. According to a pretty informative Q&A with director Phillip Noyce and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura over at CinemaBlend (click HERE to read the full piece), SALT was originally more of an R-rated affair that even featured (shock!) a sex scene between star Angelina Jolie and her on-screen husband August Diehl. However, during the cutting of the movie, the sex scene (briefly glimpsed in the original trailer) and a good deal of backstory for Jolie’s character got dumped by the wayside. Hold on, scratch that, not a good deal of backstory, ALL OF IT got dumped.
