Even Robert Downey Jr Thought IRON MAN 2 Was Disappointing
Great piece running over at the LA Times website with Robert Downey Jr revisiting and commenting on the most memorable movie roles of his now nearly forty year career (dude’s first appearance was in POUND way back in 1970). Fun stuff and highly suggest you click HERE to check out the entire article.
Bit that interested me the most, however, was RDJ admitting that IRON MAN 2 was a disappointment. Cribbed the quote for your reading pleasure. Here goes:
“The first one changed everything for me and with the second ‘Iron Man’ there were certain aspects that were dissatisfying and disappointing to me but at least they lit me right…. [The first one] was a meditation on responsibility and an exploration of how a small group of people can take a two-dimensional idea and, if the winds are right, create something that makes people say, ‘That was my favorite movie of the year.’ To me, Tony Stark’s story is a karma story and a technology story. I love a good action movie – a Steve McQueen or Tom Cruise or Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis or Mel Gibson in the right spot, and you smile and say, ‘That’s what this kind of movie is all about.’ There were two times in my life I prepared for something manically, it was this and ‘Chaplin.’ I became the expert on this guy.”
Yee-ouch. “Dissatisfying and disappointing“? “Least they lit me right”? That’s hard, but the man is entitled to his opinion.

SDCC 2010: Marvel Assembles THE AVENGERS!
One of the best things about a Comic Con is the freebies. Every major booth and showcase seems to have them and fans are more than willing to gobble them up. Unfortunately, if you can’t make it to Con then you miss out on all these cool little exclusives and end up having to buy them on Ebay months down the line for ridiculous prices which is a f**king crock because they were free in the first place and let’s not even get me started on this subject…
…moving along. Marvel gave out mini-posters this year. Mini-posters with concept art showcasing the entire cast of THE AVENGERS. Seven posters total that, when linked together, form a giant pre-production mural of geeky goodness of which the likes the world has never seen. Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Captain America (Chris Evans) show off new costumes, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) reveals his, The new Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) makes his big debut and the S.H.I.E.L.D crew (That’s Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson and newcomer Cobie Smunders as Agent Maria Hill) show off their sweet new ride (The S.H.I.E.L.D helicarrier). So much geeky deliciousness!

Posterized: Trade Expo Reveals THE AVENGERS
With the Licensing International Expo underway in Vegas, I think it is safe to say that some serious sneak peeks at upcoming blockbusters are going to flood your eyeballs the next couple of days. First up, THE AVENGERS. Yeah, Marvel and Joss Whedon’s uber-blockbuster (set for release May 2012) featuring Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). Please note that the following image is NOT a one-sheet or some teaser poster, but rather a sales image used to rustle interest from toy manufacturers and merchandising folk.
That having been said…yay. Geek overload kicked in about an hour ago when I first saw this and hasn’t stopped since. Click on the pic to check out the first image from THE AVENGERS…
Marvel Studios Is Eyeing Shane Black To Write And Direct IRON MAN 3
Writer/director Shane Black is reportedly up for the IRON MAN 3 directing gig, according to Hollywood Reporter.
If Marvel Studios has a single ounce of sense, they will make this happen. They’ve already screwed the pooch by running off Jon Favreau after he delivered two quality IRON flicks. And they’ve damn near alienated star Robert Downey Jr by shoehorning him into other Marvel flicks against his will. They need to get back into the fanboys and Downey’s good graces and hiring Black would be a good way to start.

Director Jon Favreau WON’T Return To Helm IRON MAN 3
Briefly: Director Jon Favreau will not be returning to helm IRON MAN 3.
This announcement (first reported over at Vulture and later confirmed by Favreau himself) comes after months of rumors that Favreau was not pleased with Marvel Studios forcing him to shoehorn in AVENGERS material into IRON MAN 2 at the last minute. If one is to believe the rumor mill, both Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr were displeased with the studio interference during the filming of IM2 and that this interference actually caused a rift between the two. A rift that reportedly caused RDJ to drop out of Favreau’s next pic, COWBOYS AND ALIENS.
And apparently, IRON MAN 3 would’ve been the same situation. Favreau was wanting to make a more self-contained universe for the character, while Marvel felt that IRON MAN 3 needed to be a pseudo-sequel to THE AVENGERS, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA and IRON MAN 2. Granted, all of this is rumor at the moment, but Favreau’s departure seems to confirm that are problems between director and studio.

Theatrical Review: DUE DATE
Despite having a premise lifted from a far superior movie (PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES) and two stars who really have no business being in the same movie (Robert Downey Jr and Zach Galifianakis), DUE DATE overcomes these faults and manages to be a darkly funny little road trip pic. It is nowhere near the best work for any of the parties involved, but DATE isn’t a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

DOWNEY, GALIFIANAKIS AND AUTOMOBILES…ER, I MEAN, DUE DATE LANDS A TRAILER
I wonder sometimes if director Todd Phillips thanks his lucky stars that THE HANGOVER was such a massive hit. Dude was on the back nine of a solid losing streak (one that consisted of duds such as STARSKY AND HUTCH and SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS), his schtick had grown old (yeah, we get it, man-children are awesome and women suck) and he had nowhere to go but up. Then THE HANGOVER hit big (which shocked me because it was really just a road trip version of Todd’s pic OLD SCHOOL) and now the guy is hot shit.
Next year, Phillips has THE HANGOVER 2 coming out and his PROJECT X thing (which is supposed to be some ultra-edgy comedy loaded with total unknowns), but first up is DUE DATE starring HANGOVER breakout Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr. Oh yeah, you can smell the box office potential on this one. Warner may as well start counting the money earned now.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR – WIZARD, ASTRONAUT, THIEF
I’m not real sure what the deal is, but there’s been a serious increase in Robert Downey Jr activity as of late. And we’re not talking about IRON MAN 3 details or SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 tidbit, we’re talking some seriously non-franchise announcements for good old RDJ. So, here’s a round-up of all things Downey in the last few days.
