Ryan Reynolds And Jeff Bridges Battle The Undead In First Trailer For R.I.P.D.

RIPD

The first trailer and poster for DEAD MEN IN BLACK starring a Southern fried Jeff Bridges and very glum Ryan Reynolds have arrived online and …waitasec. This is from R.I.P.D? You mean the material after the jump is NOT from a supernatural MEN IN BLACK spin-off but rather Universal’s big summer tentpole pic? Huh. You’ll understand why my confusion once you’ve seen the trailer.

Ryan Reynolds Is The New HIGHLANDER

The Playlist is reporting something that Variety already covered about three months back and since I’m still of the same train of thought as I was then I’m just going to rehash my initial thoughts. Enjoy.

Lionsgate/Summit is eyeing Ryan Reynolds to headline the upcoming HIGHLANDER reboot. While both parties are insisted they’d love to work together, no official offer has been made as of yet and Reynolds is considering a good many other projects. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is on board to direct with Neal Moritz of FAST AND FURIOUS fame producing.

Um …yeah. Is it just me or is this an awful idea? Van Wilder as an immortal?!? No. Don’t get me wrong, I dig Reynolds. He’s a funny guy who has proven on more than one occasion that he’s fully capable of doing the action hero thing. But I don‘t see him as Connor McLeod, Duncan McLeod, or any other Highlander. All I see here is a studio looking for a face to put on the poster rather than the right man for the job.

Theatrical Review: THE CHANGE-UP

I totally realize that I’m incredibly late with this review of THE CHANGE-UP starring Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds. Should’ve seen this about three weeks back. Should’ve seen this before it totally tanked at the box office and has all but disappeared from the minds of the movie-going public. But, thanks to a nasty two week run with a cold and a follow-up vacation week down in South Carolina, I’ve only now gotten around to seeing and reviewing this flick. Expect similar things to happen with RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, CRAZY STUPID LOVE, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, FINAL DESTINATION 5, FRIGHT NIGHT and 30 MINUTES OR LESS. I’m behind on some movies and will be playing catch-up for the next few days.

As far as THE CHANGE-UP goes, it’s not bad. Definitely better than the reviews and crushing box office failure would lead you to believe. As long as you go in knowing that this is very much a guy flick (can’t imagine most ladies having a good time with this considering all the hard-R dialogue and body fluid gags) and that it won’t reinvent the genre in any way, you should be fine. Basically, THE CHANGE-UP is a very standard “body swap” comedy made a little extra special thanks to the solid chemistry between Bateman and Reynolds, a willingness to do anything for a laugh and some truly magnificent CG boobs. Take that as you will.

Warner Gives GREEN LANTERN 2 A Green Light

According to THR, Warner has green-lit (ha) a sequel to GREEN LANTERN. This might come as a surprise to most folks considering LANTERN didn’t exactly perform well at the box office (Warner admits that they are “disappointed” with the numbers but that they expect the film to do well on DVD/Blu-Ray and on cable) and was violently lambasted by most film critics (myself included).

I’m not totally sure how to feel about this. On one hand, a sequel wouldn’t be saddled with the same baggage that the first film had (no need to rehash Hal’s journey to becoming a hero or how he got the ring) and it could get to the good stuff quicker. The good stuff being anything concerning the Green Lantern Corps, Oa, space, Sinestro, any of that stuff. Give audiences a sequel in which Hal (Ryan Reynolds) is seen zipping around the galaxy and basically being the badass that we know he can be and audiences will, more likely than not, be pretty happy.

GREEN LANTERN

I guess this was bound to happen. Couldn’t have a summer where every single comic movie that came out was an out-and-out winner. There always has to be a dud, an under-performer, a stinker or, at least, a film that kinda stinks but you can tell that it once might’ve had a decent aroma.

Thought maybe THOR would’ve been the dud this year, but it turned out to be a pretty great little movie. Definitely better than I was expecting. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS had potential to fail, but didn’t and ended up being the best film in that particular franchise. As for unreleased comic pics, I have faith that CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will rock, TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON will be uber-flashy and COWBOYS & ALIENS will be loved by those who see it and mocked by those who don’t (which will probably be everyone because sci-fi westerns almost never make money at the box office). I don’t expect any of these films to fit the “meh” bill for this summer.

Last summer, the big comic dud was JONAH HEX. I loved it, nobody else did. Most consider it to be one of the worst comic-to-film adaptations ever. The year before that brought audiences a lackluster WATCHMEN adaptation and the year before that was when SPEED RACER stalled out. Both movies have their high points and both movies have their low points. Neither is perfect, but they both buckled under the pressure of being a would-be blockbuster. None of them are out-and-out bombs like CATWOMAN or ELEKTRA.

Enough waffling, the big comic disappointment/dud (all depends on your point of view) this summer is GREEN LANTERN. Click on the pic to read my full review…

Film Bites: THOR Inspires Warner To Go Mythos-Heavy With New GREEN LANTERN Trailer

I find it interesting the changes that a single movie’s success can make on a marketplace. The first GREEN LANTERN trailer was clearly molded after Tony Stark in that it represented Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) as a hotshot playboy pilot who stumbles across a magic ring that gives him green armor. Had you not known the history of the Lantern then you’d have been easy to assume that the flick was a green-tinted IRON MAN knock-off. Virtually none of the outer space stuff was shown and the whole preview was cut to cash-in on what superhero was popular at that moment – I.E. Iron Man.

Future trailers for LANTERN dumped most of the relationship/playboy stuff in favor of more sci-fi stuff, but the full marketing push towards this being a uber-comic flick hadn’t occurred yet. That is, till now. This new trailer (presumably the last big one before the movie hits June 17th) is nothing but super sci-fi mythos. Hell, this trailer is basically a three minute long prequel to the movie that throws the audience straight into the “high fantasy” stuff and doesn’t look back. What you get here is the full history of the Green Lantern Corps, the Emerald Energy that fuels their abilities, the Immortals, Parallax and virtually none of the Earth stuff. I’ve heard word that most of the movie takes place on the planet Oa and this trailer seems to reinforce that pretty hard.

Film Bites: New GREEN LANTERN Trailer Showcases Parallax And Hector Hammond

Popping up just in time to attach itself to prints of THOR this weekend, a new GREEN LANTERN trailer is now online courtesy of Warner Bros and Yahoo Movies. This new look at the first cinematic adventure of Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is a solid mix of material from the original trailer (thankfully, they’ve dumped the corny IRON MAN-esque bits), the Wonder-Con footage (which was, to the say the least, the best peek at the movie thus far) and new stuff (big bad Parallax and Peter Sarsgaard’s Hector Hammond are prominently featured).

Looks like that extra nine mil that Warner threw at director Martin Campbell to beef up the CG in LANTERN is paying off because this looks really good. Too bad I’m not completely sure that modern audiences are going to pay money to go and see a big sci-fi soap opera. I know I will and I guess that‘s all I need to know, right?
