Pop-Pourri: Vanessa Hudgens Teaches The Proper Way To Iron Clothes

I dig Vanessa Hudgens. Not afraid to admit that. Gal has a spunky cute look about her that just does it for me. Not a bad little actress either. I will admit that most of her movies are garbage (BANDSLAM, BEASTLY) and fluff (need I mention the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL franchise?), but I’ve got a feeling that Hudgens is a dynamo talent just waiting to explode. Given the right role, she just might shock all of us. Too bad not more people went and saw her in SUCKER PUNCH. That might’ve pushed her more towards adult roles and away from the kiddie stuff (she’s set to appear in JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH 2 next year) that she’s currently stuck in.

That having been said, here’s some sexy pics of her from a recent photoshoot for Candies. Can’t really ramble on too much about Hudgens wanting to be treated as a serious actress or needing that one perfect role when I’m about to post a ton of pics of her ironing in her underwear. Seems wrong.

Posterized: Julia Leigh’s SLEEPING BEAUTY

SLEEPING BEAUTY is going to be a hard sell. Hell, hard sell is an understatement. It may not be able to be sold to the masses. Chances are pretty slim that it will ever play in multiplexes and the chances are even slimmer that the average moviegoer will never even know this movie exists. This is a film already in search of a cult, a film that will probably divide the few audiences that see it pretty hard, a film that will offend and anger some while mesmerizing others. SLEEPING BEAUTY is as art house as it gets and it probably won’t make it too far out of those art houses before being shuffled off to DVD/Blu-Ray obscurity.

That having been said, I can’t wait to see this flick. Emily Browning is easily one of my favorite actresses working today and if Jane Champion thinks this film is worthy (Julia Leigh directed it, Champion is…ahem…championing the film by presenting it) then it must be pretty good. Can’t imagine this being in my wheelhouse at all, but BEAUTY intrigues me. Probably has something to do with it feeling like a lost Kubrick film.

Film Bites: Emily Browning Is SLEEPING BEAUTY

If you’re a regular reader of the site then you probably already know that Adamantium Bullet isn’t exactly a site for arty movies. You know, those thought-provoking indie flicks that examine the human condition or feature real emotion and drama rather than masked killers and over-the-top theatrics. I’m a genre guy. I like horror movies, action pics, sci-fi epics and dumb comedies. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy the occasional art house pic (I do), I’m just saying that I don’t really seek these flicks out as my go-to source of entertainment.

That having been said, I love Emily Browning. She’s a criminally underused actress who has yet to smash into the big leagues and I’ll watch anything she’s in…including a movie where she’s emotionally and physically debased to the point of action. No, I’m not talking about SUCKER PUNCH. I’m referencing her new flick SLEEPING BEAUTY which apparently has nothing to do with the Disney version. This BEAUTY is an uber-dark peek into the underground world of…you know what, I’m not going to do this creepy premise justice with my ham-fisted description.

Warner Prepping JUSTICE LEAGUE For 2013; Will Feature New Batman And Superman

Sorry for the lack of updates, but my little sis had a beautiful baby boy yesterday and, well, babies take precedent over the site any day of the week. I’ll do my best to play catch up for the next few days. In other words, don’t be shocked if you see Monday’s news today and Tuesday’s news tomorrow. Running on a delayed schedule here, people.

Moving along to movie news…

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is going to be the final chapter in the Christopher Nolan Batman series. Figured I should just drop that right on you in order to move on to the real news here. I say “real news” only because TDKR being the last Bat-flick for Nolan is something that has been known for quite some time now just never really confirmed. Well, now it’s been confirmed.

Guess what else has been confirmed? Batman is going to be rebooted in 2013! Click on the above to pic to read more about this, Warner’s proposed JUSTICE LEAGUE movie and how it will feature not only a new Batman but new versions of Superman and Wonder Woman as well…

Box Office Battle: Weekend Of 03-25-11

When exactly did having an opinion about a movie become such an awful thing? At what point, exactly, did audiences and fanboys decide that if your opinion doesn’t match that of the critical populace then it must be wrong? That if your opinion is anything different than, say, what Rotten Tomatoes say about a movie then you must be a total f**king idiot that wouldn’t know a good movie if you saw one.

I’ve been wondering about this for quite some time now. Actually, I’ve been wondering about it since I saw SKYLINE in theaters last November and wrote a positive review of it. Come to think of it, this question has been plaguing me since THE LAST AIRBENDER. In case you don’t remember, I wrote a positive review and, believe it or not, really enjoyed it. And no, I’m not kidding. I wrote a positive review of THE LAST AIRBENDER and I’m sticking to it.

That review, that single review, landed me some fairly harsh criticisms and really made me rethink having a comment section on the site. Nothing like having homophobic slurs and multiple obscenities tossed my way for not agreeing with the critical mass (AIRBENDER currently has a 6% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I gave it five out of six bullets). Nothing like being told that I have no taste, no class and no idea what a good movie is.

You know what, I know what I like and that’s all I need to know. I don’t need people to tell what is a good movie and what is a bad one. Yeah, that statement is a little counter-productive to my online activities because I run a movie site that regularly reviews movies and posts my opinions onto the internet for the entire world to read. But, you know what, I don’t care. My opinions are mine.

If you like them, then I hope that they led you towards a good movie or veered you away from a bad one. If you don’t like them, then okay. That’s fine. I’m not going to get offended if you don’t agree that the 1980 film version of FLASH GORDON is one of the greatest sci-fi epics of all-time. I’m not going to get offended if you don’t agree that SCARFACE is horribly overrated and one of Brian DePalma’s worst films. And I’m not going to be upset if you don’t like COP OUT, THE LAST AIRBENDER, KNIGHT AND DAY or SKYLINE. Your opinion is your own and I really dig that you have one. Hell, I love it so much that I’d love to sit and chat movies with you some time in a nice, laid back and respectful manner.

SUCKER PUNCH

Time for me to come clean: When I first watched Terry Gilliam’s BRAZIL back in high school, I hated it. Thought it was an ugly mess of a movie that had no real point and a pathetic excuse for an ending. I couldn’t believe that Gilliam, once so happy and joyous on MONTY PYTHON, had crafted such a nihilistic abomination of a film.

Fifteen years later, BRAZIL is one of my favorite movies. I’d probably rank it in my top twenty of all-time. I’m not sure when or why my opinion of it changed. Not sure why I suddenly went from hating it so violently to loving it so passionately. I just know that, after multiple viewings and a deeper understanding of what I was getting into, Sam Lowry’s wild journey to the lobotomist’s chair now makes sense to me.

I think it’s that sense, that feeling of understanding, that allowed me to watch SUCKER PUNCH and fully process what went down. It allowed me to not only enjoy the high-powered and kinetic visuals, but also to fully grasp what director Zack Snyder was going for. This isn’t just some candy-colored trip to live-action anime land. SUCKER PUNCH is this generation’s BRAZIL: a beautifully insane movie that probably won’t be fully understood on the first viewing but will one day be considered a modern-day classic.

And yeah, I said it “modern-day classic”. Process that while you read the numerous negative reviews that are floating around out there. What’s really shameful is that the same critics who are tearing this flick a new one will be the same critics who champion SUCKER PUNCH as a misunderstood classic in a few years. I say, “Why wait?”. Go and see it again now. Process it a second or even a third time. Go into it knowing where it will end up and knowing the route of the visual map that Snyder has laid before you. This is a film that can be processed on the first viewing, but almost requires a few more to absorb all the little details.

That isn’t going to happen, of course. Critics, as a whole, dismiss immediately and do so with extreme prejudice. And when it comes to Snyder, they almost always use the same critiques. You’ll find jabs about how he pushes visuals over story, how he ignores the performances in favor of slo-mo grandeur and you’ll always find complaints about his pictures lacking context, pretext, substance and point.

Personally, SUCKER PUNCH drew me immediately and didn’t let go till I witnessed a montage of deleted musical numbers playing over the end credits. Click on the pic to read my full review…

The Girls Of SUCKER PUNCH: Jena Malone

In honor of SUCKER PUNCH, we here at Adamantium Bullet are going to throw a spotlight on the five lovely leading ladies of the flick. Expect copious amounts of sexy pics, a little bit of commentary on their careers thus far and not much else. Enjoy!

Out of all the lovely ladies of SUCKER PUNCH, Jena Malone is the seasoned pro. Forty-three credits in a little over fifteen years? That’s impressive. Really impressive when you realize that Malone has figured out how to deftly move between micro-budget pics, indies and blockbusters.

What’s even more impressive is that Malone has appeared in quality stuff like CONTACT, COLD MOUNTAIN, DONNIE DARKO, LIFE AS A HOUSE, PRIDE & PREJUDICE, THE RUINS, INTO THE WILD and THE MESSENGER. And that’s the shortlist! Scope out her IMDB page and you’ll see that this gal has dabbled in every genre and has delivered solid performances across the board.

The Girls Of SUCKER PUNCH: Jamie Chung

In honor of SUCKER PUNCH, we here at Adamantium Bullet are going to throw a spotlight on the five lovely leading ladies of the flick. Expect copious amounts of sexy pics, a little bit of commentary on their careers thus far and not much else. Enjoy!

Jamie Chung is a moderately talented actress in search of a decent role. Since her debut on THE REAL WORLD nearly five years, Chung has tried hard to ditch her reality show roots and get herself acknowledged as a real actress. In those five years, she’s amassed nearly twenty credits and guess what? There isn’t a winner in the bunch.

Yeah, SUCKER PUNCH is probably going to change all that. But the catch is that Chung is an okay actress who keeps getting saddled with sub-par work. Is it her good looks that prevent her from being cast in serious roles? I mean, seriously, half of Chung’s career has been spent playing sorority sisters, bimbos and babes. Eye candy is fine and all, but this gal needs something more substantial.

The Girls Of SUCKER PUNCH: Vanessa Hudgens

In honor of SUCKER PUNCH, we here at Adamantium Bullet are going to throw a spotlight on the five lovely leading ladies of the flick. Expect copious amounts of sexy pics, a little bit of commentary on their careers thus far and not much else. Enjoy!

Vanessa Hudgens. Just uttering her name sends thoughts of naughty cell phone pics, Zac Efron and marionettes swirling through my head. Is that weird? I mean, she did have the whole cell pic fiasco and she did/was/is date Efron for a few years. And she was in the live-action THUNDERBIRDS movie, so I guess that’s where the marionette thing came from despite the fact that she was real and decidedly not a puppet. Incidentally, that flick wasn’t that great. You might do well to avoid it.

Depending on your age, you might want to avoid most of this gal’s work. Regardless of sexy pics and her frequent skin-tastic photoshoots, Hudgens is a Disney kid through and through. Outside of the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL movies, she’s appeared in stuff like THE SUITE LIFE OF ZACK AND CODY, DRAKE & JOSH, BANDSLAM (not technically a Disney movie, but it may as well have been) and DISNEY 365. So, unless you’re a tween or have a child, you might want to avoid most of this stuff.
