Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN Now Titled MAN OF STEEL; Michael Shannon Will Play Zod

Ready for a triple dose of Zack Snyder SUPERMAN reboot news? Hope so, because here it comes. First up, the film is going to be titled MAN OF STEEL. Nice to see that’s been made official and, let’s be honest, it works. Lot better than, say, SUPERMAN 6 or SUPERMAN RETURNS 2 and it’s definitely better than SUPERMAN LIVES or just plain SUPERMAN. MAN OF STEEL means this might be more DARK KNIGHT than RETURNS, if you know what I mean…and you probably don’t. Let’s just move along.

The second bit of news is a not good as the first. Turns out those rumors Zod being the big bad in the new flick are true…and Michael Shannon is going to play him. You’re probably wondering “Who?” right about now and I don’t blame you. Shannon’s a decent actor, but he’s not terribly well-known outside of the art house crowd. Most sites are screaming about how amazing he was in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (a movie, that despite critical accolades, tanked stateside) and how BUG was an unseen masterpiece. As good as those flicks may be (I’ve seen neither), I’m guessing most folks are going to recognize Shannon for his work as “Floyd Poteet” in BAD BOYS II.

Warner Prepping JUSTICE LEAGUE For 2013; Will Feature New Batman And Superman

Sorry for the lack of updates, but my little sis had a beautiful baby boy yesterday and, well, babies take precedent over the site any day of the week. I’ll do my best to play catch up for the next few days. In other words, don’t be shocked if you see Monday’s news today and Tuesday’s news tomorrow. Running on a delayed schedule here, people.

Moving along to movie news…

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is going to be the final chapter in the Christopher Nolan Batman series. Figured I should just drop that right on you in order to move on to the real news here. I say “real news” only because TDKR being the last Bat-flick for Nolan is something that has been known for quite some time now just never really confirmed. Well, now it’s been confirmed.

Guess what else has been confirmed? Batman is going to be rebooted in 2013! Click on the above to pic to read more about this, Warner’s proposed JUSTICE LEAGUE movie and how it will feature not only a new Batman but new versions of Superman and Wonder Woman as well…

Amy Adams Is The New Lois Lane!

In a bit of news that was probably timed to take some of the edge off the disappointing SUCKER PUNCH box office numbers, THR has revealed that Zack Synder’s SUPERMAN has cast Lois Lane: Amy Adams. So much for those rumors that Lois wouldn’t be in this new version.

In a statement released Sunday, Snyder had this to say:

“Second only to Superman himself, the question of who will play Lois Lane is arguably what fans have been most curious about. So we are excited to announce the casting of Amy Adams, one of the most versatile and respected actresses in films today. Amy has the talent to capture all of the qualities we love about Lois: smart, tough, funny, warm, ambitious and, of course, beautiful.”

Amen to all that, brother. Click on the pic to read the full story…

Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN Reboot In Trouble? SUCKER PUNCH Not Testing Well? Guy Ritchie Taking Over XERXES? The Rumor Mill Explodes!

I’ve always found it interesting how the Hollywood popularity scale works. One week you’re up, the next you’re down and, if the winds are right, you might be completely out of favor in the space of a few days. This up-and-down process seems to be what is happening to director Zack Snyder.

A few months back, all the movie sites and blogs were abuzz at the announcement that Snyder would be helming Warner’s big budget SUPERMAN reboot. Word had it that producer Christopher Nolan (director of INCEPTION and THE DARK KNIGHT) had hand-picked Snyder from a list that included the likes of Darren Aronofsky, Tony Scott, Matt Reeves and Duncan Jones. All solid choices, but the guy who’d brought Warner 300 was the one who got the job.

And personally, I think Snyder is a solid choice. His visual style and ability to bring comic book sensibilities to the big screen is going to lend itself well to the SUPERMAN franchise.

However, not all is good in Snyder world. WATCHMEN was far from the hit that Warner had hoped it would be. His last film, the 3D kiddie CG epic LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE, spectacularly underperformed and ended up being a huge black mark on Warner’s 2010 fiscal year. And his next, SUCKER PUNCH, is apparently not testing very well.

Film Bites: Disney Animator Robb Pratt Crafts A Hand-Drawn Homage To Old-School SUPERMAN

With the Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN just around the corner and SMALLVILLE playing it fast and loose with the mythos, it’s nice to see that some people haven’t forgotten old-school Supes. Namely, the 1941-42 Max Fleischer take on the character. You know, the Superman that battled giant robots, mad scientists and natural disasters.

Disney animator Robb Pratt hasn’t forgotten him and actually crafted a sweet little minute-long homage to the old-school Supes basically by himself. Oh sure, he had help and I don’t mean to discount their efforts. But this was basically one guy who wanted to make an old-school Superman toon and he did it, by himself. The average hand-drawn animated feature or even Saturday morning cartoon has thousands of animators, so the fact that Pratt did this basically by himself is amazing. Even cooler is that Pratt actually incorporated the music from the live-action serial from the 40s and even brought in SUPERBOY star John Newton to provide the voice of Clark Kent/Superman.

Henry Cavill Is Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN

Brit nobody…er, I mean, actor Henry Cavill has been cast as the Man Of Steel in Zack Snyder’s upcoming SUPERMAN reboot. I guess I could’ve said he was cast as Superman in the SUPERMAN reboot, but I felt that was too many uses of Superman in one sentence. Shit, did I just use Superman three times in the last sentence? I did, didn’t I? Let’s just move along.

Variety broke the story and provided a nice little pull-quote too. Check out what Snyder had to say about Cavill’s casting below:

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder said in a statement. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

I’d like to say that Cavill is a solid choice and all, but I really can’t. Dude hasn’t done much in the way of good work. Oh sure, he’s not too bad on THE TUDORS and I’m guessing that is the basis point that Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan used to hire the guy. But have you seen BLOOD CREEK? How about TRISTAN AND ISODOLE? What about HELLRAISER: HELLWORLD? Let me save you some time and drop three mini-reviews for these pics: Awful. Boring. “What the hell were they thinking?”.

The Final Season Of SMALLVILLE Might End With Tom Welling Donning The Red And Blue Tights

Considering I haven’t watched SMALLVILLE for about five seasons now, I wasn’t really sure if I should even post the following pic. But, considering I started watching SMALLVILLE to see the progression of young Clark Kent to Superman (a journey that I ultimately grew tired of due to too many “freak of the week” episodes and inane plot twists), I figured I really needed to post this pic.

After all, this is reportedly the last season of SMALLVILLE and, if this teaser poster is to be believed, Clark will don the red and blue tights sometime later this season. I’m guessing in the last ten minutes of the last episode, but it is nice that the series will have a decent conclusion that connects to the previous Superman incarnations.

ZACK SNYDER TO DIRECT SUPERMAN REBOOT

While the whole “Who’s directing the SUPERMAN reboot?” question has been floating around pretty heavily for a few weeks now, the reality is that the question has been around since SUPERMAN RETURNS hit a couple years back. Seemingly everyone in Hollywood has been attached to this project at one point or another, but the time has come to finally declare a winner.

And that winner is…Zack Snyder? Hey, waitasec, didn’t he say he turned this down just last week? Well, either he was lying or a big bag of cash was tossed his way because Deadline is reporting that he’s the man for the job. Christopher Nolan is still going to spearhead the whole thing, serving as a “godfather” to the project and David Goyer (THE DARK KNIGHT) is still onboard to write it. I wonder if it is still going to be titled THE MAN OF STEEL?

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN REVEALS HIS CANDIDATES FOR THE SUPERMAN REBOOT DIRECTING GIG

It’s been common knowledge (at least with us movie nerds) for awhile now that Christopher Nolan was planning on rebooting the SUPERMAN franchise. The idea is that he’ll produce and spearhead the project (meaning that he’ll have a hand in the script [with is being penned by David S. Goyer] and the day-to-day stuff), but that someone else will actually direct. And the rumor for months now was that his brother, Jonathan, was the man for that job.

Of course, Jonathan’s involvement always seemed sketchy. Yes, I get that Chris would want his brother to become more involved in the business and what better way than to use some of that DARK KNIGHT cred to shoehorn bro into a cushy directing gig. But, this is Hollywood, and Hollywood doesn’t usually let first time directors helm GIANT projects like a SUPERMAN reboot, DK cred or no.

Well, with the massive impending DC announcement on the horizon (which will reportedly involve big news about all their film franchises), Nolan has been put in the position of having to present Warner a list of possible candidates for the Supes gig that doesn’t include his bro. And according to Deadline, that list has been presented and here it is.
