Universal’s Second Reboot Of THE WOLFMAN Loses A Title, But Gains A Director

Louis Morneau has been hired by Universal to helm their upcoming direct-to-video reboot of THE WOLFMAN titled WEREWOLF, according to Moviehole.

Let’s break this down quickly and painfully, shall we?

1 ) Universal is rebooting THE WOLFMAN…again. This comes less than two years after the Benicio Del Toro reboot that bombed at the box office. How badly did it bomb? Flick made 139mil worldwide off a budget of 150mil. Oh, did I mention that it was nearly a decade in development and the official listed budget is probably well under what Universal really spent on it? Yeah, remaking THE WOLFMAN was a bad idea and yet Universal is going to do it again…

2 ) …under a different title. Can somebody explain to me how changing the title of a WOLFMAN redo to WEREWOLF is a good idea? Doesn’t changing the title (and thereby eliminating the sole connection that this is a reboot) defeat the purpose of this flick? Doesn’t it just make this into yet another cheap DTV werewolf pic? I’m confused. I thought that if you are going to reboot a property, you have to stick with the title that indicates that it is a remake. That seems like the logical choice, but…

3 ) …none of that matters when you’ve hired Louis Morneau to helm your movie. This guy is the king of shitty direct-to-video sequels. Have you seen THE HITCHER II: I’VE BEEN WAITING? How about JOY RIDE 2: DEAD END? What about CARNOSAUR 2? Okay, maybe CARNOSAUR connect doesn’t matter much, but the other two are prime examples of what NOT to do when making a sequel.

JURASSIC PARK 4? Steven Spielberg And The Writer Of THOR Might Make It Happen

JURASSIC PARK 4. Feels like it should have happened by now, doesn’t it? The first three films made a mint at the box office, the tie-in stuff sold like crazy, everybody in the known world pretty much knows about the franchise, so why did this series end at three films?

Oh yeah, JURASSIC PARK 3.

I remember now. The film that should’ve been second went third and let everybody down. That’s what the killed the series. Sequels are supposed to go forward, not back. You can’t end the second film with a T-Rex rampaging through San Diego and expect people to be okay with another trip to Isla Sorna for the next film. Series should’ve went to NYC for three, brought pteranodons to the city and had them biting the heads off folks who sunbath on the rooftops…kinda like the movie Q: THE WINGED SERPENT but with a bigger budget.

Universal Prepping Another WOLFMAN Reboot

Remember the rumors a couple of months back that Universal was contemplating a reboot of THE WOLFMAN? Turns out the rumors are true and Moviehole has the details.

According to Moviehole, Universal is freshening up a discarded sequel script to Joe Johnston’s recent WOLFMAN pic (the one with Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins) for use as a springboard for a new direct-to-DVD franchise (no director has been chosen to helm yet). Michael Tabb (one of the many writers who worked on TROY) wrote the original draft, no word yet as to whether he’ll return to do the rewrite.

Vin Diesel Has To Take A Pay Cut To Bring Audiences An R-Rated RIDDICK

When did Facebook become a viable source of movie information? Seems like every other story is broke via some actor or director’s Facebook or Twitter page. Doesn’t really bother me, but it seems like a untrustworthy source. Directors and stars are always psyched about projects, but that doesn’t mean that the projects they are psyched about are anywhere close to reality.

Take Vin Diesel, for example. Official word for months now has been that a new RIDDICK picture was in the works and that it would be a toned-down affair, closer in spirit to PITCH BLACK than the overblown awesomeness that was CHRONICLES. There have been a few leaked pre-production designs, promises from writer/director David Twohy and a lot of old-fashioned promotion of Diesel himself, but not much in the way of an official green light from the studio.

One could’ve easily assumed that in the wake of FAST FIVE’s success, the announcement of FAST SIX and Diesel signing on to produce and star in the sci-fi kid pic THE MACHINE that RIDDICK might’ve just been a pipe dream a couple of big-name guys were working on. After all, no green light from the studio means no movie. I need only point at the nearly-twenty-years-in-the-making BEVERLY HILLS COP IV as a prime example of that. Just because a big somebody says something it is happening, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is actually happening.

Jeremy Renner Is The New Bourne

According to /film, Universal and writer/director Tony Gilroy have finally settled on who will star in THE BOURNE LEGACY: Jeremy Renner. Reportedly, the race for the new Bourne boiled down to Renner, Taylor Kitsch (X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE), Shia LaBeouf (EAGLE EYE) and Joel Edgerton (STAR WARS EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES). Kitsch couldn’t find the time (he has BATTLESHIP and JOHN CARTER OF MARS coming out next year), LaBeouf didn’t want to submit a screen test and the studio hated Gilroy’s top choice Edgerton. This left Renner who neither party was totally crazy about but decided would be perfect for the role.

Personally, I still think the idea of a Bourne pic without Jason Bourne (Renner will play a new spy operating in the universe established by the first three films) is a dumb idea. Sounds like THE NEXT KARATE KID to me and we all saw how that turned out.

Film Bites: Ryan Reynolds And Jason Bateman Swap Bodies In THE CHANGE-UP (NSFW)

Ever seen a trailer that is pretty funny and seems to work despite the fact that the studio wants you to believe that it is exactly like another movie by using the familiar music, title fonts and even going so far as to promote this new film as being from the writers of the film that they are desperately mimicking? If you haven‘t experienced that, then allow me to introduce you to the red band trailer for THE CHANGE-UP.

The studio wants you to believe this is just like THE HANGOVER. Notice the orange and blue font used in the trailer. Same as THE HANGOVER. Catch the usage of “How You Like Me Now?” by The Heavy? Yeah, that would be the same song used the trailer for THE HANGOVER. And wouldn’t you know it? THE CHANGE-UP was written by the guys who wrote…you guessed it…THE HANGOVER. We’ll just casually ignore the fact that they are also responsible for FOUR CHRISTMASES, GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST and the Martin Lawrence classic REBOUND.

So yeah, Universal is subconsciously mind-f**king you into believing that this flick isn‘t something it isn‘t. Why else would they attempt to take a film that is clearly nothing like THE HANGOVER and make you believe that it is. THE HANGOVER is about four guys who have a wild weekend in Vegas. THE CHANGE-UP is about a married man (Jason Bateman) and a single guy (Ryan Reynolds) who magically swap bodies after accidentally crossing streams while peeing in what I can only assume is a magical fountain. Sounds like the lesson here is the same lesson that Egon kept telling the Ghostbusters: Don’t cross the streams.

Universal Home Entertainment Has Reboots Of THE WOLFMAN And CAT PEOPLE In The Works

According to STYD and Bloody Disgusting, Universal Home Entertainment (AKA their DTV shingle that produced such cinematic gems as DEATH RACE 2, SMOKIN’ ACES 2 and BRING IT ON: FIGHT TO THE FINISH) is prepping reboots of THE WOLFMAN and CAT PEOPLE.

Yes, you read that right, THE WOLFMAN is being rebooted again. You might remember the reboot with Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins that hit theaters Valentine’s Day 2010 or you might not. Didn’t too well at the box office which makes the announcement of a second reboot kinda perplexing.

There isn’t much in the way of details available yet, but conflicting reports peg this new version as either the beginning of a new DTV franchise (similar to what they’ve done with the DEATH RACE series) or a teen-friendly take (similar to TWILIGHT, I assume). Both way are bad ideas and I really don’t see the logic in continuing this franchise so soon after it underperformed at the box office.

Universal Is Eyeing A 3D Reboot Of DOOM

A film reboot of DOOM? In 3D? Why am I not surprised?

What‘s Playing reports:

No surprise to hear that, what with the industry hellbent on utilizing all and any picture patented brands (G.I Joe, Monopoly, Rubik’s Cube, Tomb Raider),a reboot – one that entirely skips over the events of the insipid 2005 film – is in the early stages of development. Universal own the rights to the film and though they’ve always been keen on doing another Doom movie sometime, the success of Paramount’s G.I Joe : Rise of Cobra piqued their interest even more. Uni is said to be script scouting for a Doom movie that’ll make full advantage of contemporary cinema’s richest weapon – er, 3D.

If I were to make a list of the biggest film disappointments of the last decade, I’m pretty sure that the original DOOM (despite starring The Rock and Karl Urban) would be pretty high on that list. As a fan, this wasn’t the DOOM pic I’d been waiting nearly a decade for. This was a SyFy channel special, a Saturday night quickie that you forget about the second it ends.

Oh sure, there were a couple of good moments here and there. The “first person” sequence (included below so you don’t have to actually watch the movie) was pretty cool, Urban made for a decent enough hero and it was nice to see The Rock playing a bad guy. But that’s where my praise ends. The rest of the movie was an ugly mess that seemed to do everything in it’s power to alienate and piss off fans.

And while I’d love to say that a reboot is totally called for here and that Universal is right on the money, I really can’t. For one thing, their the same studio that f**ked up the original film, so what’s to say they won’t do the same here? DOOM should’ve been an action epic on par with TOTAL RECALL or ROBOCOP and it ended up being a movie that most people have completely forgotten about and the people who were in it don’t even include it on their resumes.

AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS Trip Canceled; Guillermo Del Toro Books Flight To PACIFIC RIM

Yesterday morning, I09 announced that Guillermo Del Toro’s long-in-development (GDT has been working on it for 15 years!) adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS had finally received the green light from Universal. The flick was set to start filming in June. James Cameron was to produce! Tom Cruise to star! A rumored 150 million dollar budget! 3D! (Cue the fireworks!)

Alas, this announcement (which pretty much was confirmed the rumors and already existing information) turned out to be false and the truth is quite the opposite. The guys over at Criterion Cast contacted GDT himself and the following e-mail conversation occurred:

Me: I’m sure everyone is e-mailing you this question today, but is this June start date for Mountains of Madness true? Got your greenlight?

Guillermo: The opposite- Dead. – G

Ouch. This hurts almost as much as GDT leaving the HOBBIT prequels to start work on this project and the DISNEY DOUBLE DARE YOU series (which was, until it was canceled, to be a series of horror films geared towards families). Hurts almost as much as DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (which GDT produced and wrote) getting bumped off the schedule to the nebulous TBA release date. Dude just can’t seem to catch a break. Seems like every project he has been attached to recently has either been canceled, delayed or put on the back-burner due to funding issues.

Writer/Director Tony Gilroy Has A Long List Of Potential Leads For THE BOURNE LEGACY

Before we get to the actual story here I just want to say that I think the idea of a Jason Bourne movie without Bourne is a pretty stupid idea. Yeah, I realize that the BOURNE series revitalized the entire spy genre and grossed around 950 million dollars worldwide. And yes, I realize that Universal has a legitimate successor to the Bond series on their hands and that there is a demand for more Bourne.

Thing is, the BOURNE series ended on a perfect note. There really isn’t anywhere to go after the end of ULTIMATUM and Matt Damon knew it. That’s why he left. Same goes for director Paul Greengrass who helmed both of the sequels. They knew that the series had run it’s course and it was time to let Jason Bourne stop punching people in the throat.

But Universal in all of their infinite wisdom can’t let go. That’s why they’ve tapped writer/director Tony Gilroy to helm THE BOURNE LEGACY, a Bourne film that…get this…won’t actually feature the character of Jason Bourne! Apparently the idea that Uni and Gilroy are running with is that they can kick start a new series of films that will feature another amnesiac spy who enjoys kicking ass that will be set in the universe of previous films. Also, the new series will leave the door open for Damon to return sometime down the line if he choose so.

That’s all fine and dandy, I guess. Spin-offs are nothing new in Hollywood and I realize there is money to be made with this series, but why call it THE BOURNE LEGACY? If Bourne isn’t in it, I feel that is a desperate ploy to draw audiences in with the promise that he’ll be in it despite the fact that he won’t. Rename it and this could possibly work. Keep that title and this is nothing more than a desperate cash-grab reminiscent of THE NEXT KARATE KID and SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL.
