Kaneda Unhappy That Warner Is Still Trying To Reboot AKIRA; Tetsuo Unavailable For Comment

AKIRA lives! Yay?

Variety is reporting that Jaume Collet-Serra (director of the excellent ORPHAN, the kinda okay HOUSE OF WAX remake and the thoroughly disappointing Liam Neeson actioner UNKNOWN) has been tapped by Warner to revive the live-action adaptation of AKIRA. Warner hopes that, rather than following previous director Allen Hughes’s vision of a massively expensive two-part R-rated epic, Serra will deliver a single film. One that won’t cost 300 million dollars to produce, will be delivered on time (a Collet-Serra trademark) and will be palatable to the masses. In other words, a PG-13 nightmare along the lines of the recent DRAGONBALL movie. Yay???

Just let this flick die already! The hardcore fans don’t want it and the non-fans have no idea what the hell this property is, so what’s the point of this? Why is Warner jonesing so hard to bring this to the big screen? And, seriously, how is a 90 minute long abomination going to make this situation any better? I mean, the two-parter with the guy who directed THE BOOK OF ELI was bad enough, but this? This is hurtful. Almost like Warner and producer Leonardo DiCaprio are aiming to piss off fans…like me. And yeah, I’m pissed. “Boycott the f**king movie” pissed.

Film Bites: THOR Inspires Warner To Go Mythos-Heavy With New GREEN LANTERN Trailer

I find it interesting the changes that a single movie’s success can make on a marketplace. The first GREEN LANTERN trailer was clearly molded after Tony Stark in that it represented Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) as a hotshot playboy pilot who stumbles across a magic ring that gives him green armor. Had you not known the history of the Lantern then you’d have been easy to assume that the flick was a green-tinted IRON MAN knock-off. Virtually none of the outer space stuff was shown and the whole preview was cut to cash-in on what superhero was popular at that moment – I.E. Iron Man.

Future trailers for LANTERN dumped most of the relationship/playboy stuff in favor of more sci-fi stuff, but the full marketing push towards this being a uber-comic flick hadn’t occurred yet. That is, till now. This new trailer (presumably the last big one before the movie hits June 17th) is nothing but super sci-fi mythos. Hell, this trailer is basically a three minute long prequel to the movie that throws the audience straight into the “high fantasy” stuff and doesn’t look back. What you get here is the full history of the Green Lantern Corps, the Emerald Energy that fuels their abilities, the Immortals, Parallax and virtually none of the Earth stuff. I’ve heard word that most of the movie takes place on the planet Oa and this trailer seems to reinforce that pretty hard.

First Look: Tom Hardy As Bane In THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

AICN (by way of /film and virtually every other geek site on the net) had posted the first pic of Tom Hardy as Bane in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and I’m bringing the goods to you. You don’t have to thank me. Just enjoy the pic which is pretty good but reminds me a little of Psycho Mantis from the METAL GEAR series for some reason.

Be sure to click HERE to check Warner’s official website for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES for some other little bits and bobs. Nothing substantial yet (save for this pic), but the film literally just started shooting. Expect more goodies as the weeks roll on. Till then, click on the above pic to check out the first full look at Bane…

Keanu Reeves In Talks To Headline AKIRA

Considering the big-budget reboot of AKIRA has been in the works for nearly twenty years now (I remember reading about Luc Beeson circling it around ‘93), I’ve a good a pretty good feeling that this project is never going to happen. As in, never ever. Not now, not twenty years from now. AKIRA is A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES for the sci-fi set.

That having been said, Warner and the Hughes brothers (recently of BOOK OF ELI) are still stumbling forward (project has been over at Warner since 2006) with their take and they’ve attracted a new headliner: Keanu Reeves. Whoa.

Film Bites: New GREEN LANTERN Trailer Showcases Parallax And Hector Hammond

Popping up just in time to attach itself to prints of THOR this weekend, a new GREEN LANTERN trailer is now online courtesy of Warner Bros and Yahoo Movies. This new look at the first cinematic adventure of Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is a solid mix of material from the original trailer (thankfully, they’ve dumped the corny IRON MAN-esque bits), the Wonder-Con footage (which was, to the say the least, the best peek at the movie thus far) and new stuff (big bad Parallax and Peter Sarsgaard’s Hector Hammond are prominently featured).

Looks like that extra nine mil that Warner threw at director Martin Campbell to beef up the CG in LANTERN is paying off because this looks really good. Too bad I’m not completely sure that modern audiences are going to pay money to go and see a big sci-fi soap opera. I know I will and I guess that‘s all I need to know, right?

Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN Now Titled MAN OF STEEL; Michael Shannon Will Play Zod

Ready for a triple dose of Zack Snyder SUPERMAN reboot news? Hope so, because here it comes. First up, the film is going to be titled MAN OF STEEL. Nice to see that’s been made official and, let’s be honest, it works. Lot better than, say, SUPERMAN 6 or SUPERMAN RETURNS 2 and it’s definitely better than SUPERMAN LIVES or just plain SUPERMAN. MAN OF STEEL means this might be more DARK KNIGHT than RETURNS, if you know what I mean…and you probably don’t. Let’s just move along.

The second bit of news is a not good as the first. Turns out those rumors Zod being the big bad in the new flick are true…and Michael Shannon is going to play him. You’re probably wondering “Who?” right about now and I don’t blame you. Shannon’s a decent actor, but he’s not terribly well-known outside of the art house crowd. Most sites are screaming about how amazing he was in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (a movie, that despite critical accolades, tanked stateside) and how BUG was an unseen masterpiece. As good as those flicks may be (I’ve seen neither), I’m guessing most folks are going to recognize Shannon for his work as “Floyd Poteet” in BAD BOYS II.

Director Jonathan Liebesman Is Going To Post-Convert WRATH OF THE TITANS Into 3D

Post-conversion 3D is a constant source of debate amongst movie fans. Most agree that it represents the greediest side of the movie industry, a side that consists of money-hungry studios who want to convert a decidedly non-3D movie into 3D in order to milk a few extra bucks from moviegoers. And, nine times out of ten, the movies that are post-converted are movies that were never filmed for the format.

A perfect example of this would be CLASH OF THE TITANS. This is a flick that was shot in 2D with the intention of being shown in 2D. Had perhaps the director shot the movie with the intention of converting it to 3D (meaning that he would have made the film brighter to suit the format, added a few 3D flourishes into it and basically filmed it as if he was filming in 3D) it might have worked. But because it wasn’t shot with the intention of converting it to 3D, the process didn’t take and it ruined what it an okay movie.

Hell, to be more precise, the post-conversion 3D job done on CLASH was so bad that I opted to NOT review the movie because I felt that the entire picture had been undone by the format. I just couldn’t take a movie seriously that looked like a pop-up book run amok.

(Sidenote: I’ve seen CLASH minus 3D since and I think it’s a damn fine b-movie. Definitely not a great film, but it is definitely entertaining and works as a perfect Saturday afternoon filler movie. And, strangely enough, I’ve heard that CLASH looks better in 3D than it did at the theater because Warner redid the post-conversion for the Blu-Ray release. Can’t confirm that, but that’s what I’ve heard.)

Anyways, post-conversion 3D has come a good ways since then (which is funny to think about since this was just a year ago). Movies like THE GREEN HORNET and PIRANHA 3D have proved that filming a movie in 2D and converting it in post to 3D can actually work, while stuff like MY SOUL TO TAKE proves that the 3D hackjob is still possible.

Interestingly enough, you’d think Warner would avoid post-conversion 3D for the their upcoming CLASH sequel WRATH OF THE TITANS considering how poor the original job was. But no, they haven’t learned and director Jonathan Liebesman (BATTLE: LOS ANGELES) is heading up the charge to repeat the same mistakes the original made.

Warner Bros Is Rebooting THE BODYGUARD

Warner Bros is prepping a reboot of THE BODYGUARD, according to Deadline. Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer are writing the script and the project is being considered a priority project over at Warner.

Here’s a little of what Deadline had to say:

Scripted by Lawrence Kasdan and directed by Mick Jackson, the original was a fairly straight ahead tale of a Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner in a Steve McQueen homage, down to his hairstyle) drafted to protect a singing diva whose life has been threatened by a stalker, then falling for her in a way he fears is a distraction from his job.

The new version is similar, including the love story, but here the bodyguard will be a former Iraq war veteran who gets the job protecting the star as his first gig after leaving the Army. He discovers that the world of Twitter, Google Maps and TMZ has made access to celebrities easier than ever, making the job more difficult than ever. The goal is to take a young female singer with global appeal and give her the platform that The Bodyguard did [Whitney] Houston.

Hmmm…not sure what to say about this. I’d love to say that the original is a classic and that it should never be remade, but that really isn’t the case. THE BODYGUARD is a quality piece of cinematic cheese that entertains but has some serious flaws like Costner’s haircut and Houston’s bi-polar performance. If done right, a reboot might actually be a good idea.

LET’S HOPE MINING DOESN’T MAKE ITS WAY INTO THE FILM ADAPTATION OF MASS EFFECT

I’m honestly shocked this didn’t happen earlier, but THR is reporting that popular vid-game franchise MASS EFFECT is heading to the big screen. Mark Protosevich is writing the script (rumored to be the kick-off point for a potential trilogy), and Ari and Avi Arad are producing the pic. On board as well is Legendary Pictures producers Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni who’ll be releasing the pic under their deal with Warner Bros. Oh, and in case you’re thinking that this might be another crap vid-game-to-film adaptation, BioWare (the developers of MASS EFFECT) co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk are going to exec-produce.
